Explore Mother Nature’s creation by leaving the ancient city of Luang Prabang behind to the northern region from the city. You will arrive at the riverside village called Ban Pha Teung, that is located a stone’s throw away from the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers. Before going on the thrilling kayaking expedition, you will first be properly briefed by a skilled expert on the safety measures and the kayaking equipment. Delve into the beauty of the Nam Ou river, which is one of the tributaries to the Mekong river. As you paddle along the Nam Ou river in your kayak, you will catch the sight of the rising limestone cliffs that protrude out of the waters. Do not forget to take plenty of pictures of the scenic landscapes that exudes beauty and serenity.
Savour the delectable lunch at the riverside restaurant near the meeting point of Nam Ou and Mekong river and taste the flavours of Laos. After the hearty lunch, you will then head to the other side of Mekong river to the entrance of the Pak Ou caves. The Pak Ou caves are one of the highly revered sites amongst Buddhist in Lao as the caves are filled with more than 4000 statues depicting Buddha in varying positions and shapes. The Pak Ou caves can be divided in two caves, which are the Tham Ting (lower cave) and Tham Theung (upper cave) that are separated by flights of stairs. There is a widespread belief amongst the Buddhist community that the statues of Buddhist icons can be predated back to centuries ago. The Pak Ou caves are also the popular site of pilgrimage amongst the believers as they will be involved in washing and attending to the statues.
Your journey continues along the Mekong river on a kayak to visit the Ban Xang Hai village. The Ban Xang Hai village is well known for its homemade lao-lao (‘rice whiskey) that is available for purchase and tasting. They even offer moonshine that is mixed with reptiles, such as snakes and other critters. Admire the local handicrafts that are made by the skilled villagers, which includes silks and other handmade goods. You will depart from the Ban Xang Hai village after an exhausting journey to Luang Prabang with memories that will last a lifetime!
