Day 1- Muang Khua
Escape the hustle-and-bustle that comes from the cities and hit upon the beaten roads by a local public bus that will take you to the serene Muang Khua. The Muang Khua is located within the province of Phongsali, that is at the northern part of Laos. The charming village is near the confluence of Nam Ou and Nam Phak rivers and it is usually the stopping point between Laos and Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam. Explore the stunning village that is not fully developed and within the midst of rich verdant trees, thus still carries the charms of a more simpler town.
Discover the pastel-coloured houses that are littered all over the land as you take upon the beaten paths to explore the village. Observe and interact with the affable villagers that reside in the serene village of Muang Khua, to learn about their way of life. Though there may be nothing much to see in Muang Khua, the tranquil ambiance of the village makes it the perfect spot for long walks upon the trails. As the day comes to an end, you will head to the guesthouse that offers a basic yet comfortable room to rest for the night.
Day 2 - Honglerk village
Awake from your slumber in a peaceful environment of Muang Khuang and delight yourself to a delicious breakfast before you begin your exciting journey. Stroll along the well-trodden paths that will take you through stunning sights of nature to the Honglerk village. The Honglerk village is the home of the ethnic Akha community, that tend to inhabit the higher in the mountains. The Honglerk village is a part of the “Akha Village Experience Project”, which aims to provide an alternative income for previous Opium-producing villages by promoting a more sustainable volunteer-tourism.
Explore the serene village that is within the midst of an abundance of untouched nature by strolling through the narrow streets. Discover the traditional dress, donned by the women in the village. The differences in their shapes of the headdress and also the designs on their clothes illustrates each women to a family and their ethnic subgroup. Observe the hardworking villagers as they carry out their daily tasks, such as grow rice to sustain the needs of their families and to also sell to the market. They also produce some cash crops and forage the dense forests for some edible plants. End your exciting day at either a family home or a simple “Akha Nature Lodge” that has a stunning view of the neighbouring mountains.
Day 3 - Be a Farmer for a day
Take the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience what it feels like to be a farmer for a single day by participating in some farm work at the Honglerk village. Learn about the farming process from the Akha people by supporting the villagers in their daily activities on the fields and at home. Some of these activities may include foraging through the forest, planting rice, harvesting rice, carrying water and finishing some house chores. Gain some knowledge on the local foods from the villagers by learning how they prepare their daily meals. Interact with the adorable village children by teaching them some English while also learning the Akha and Lao language.
Indulge in some delectable Akha food that will surely leave your stomach feeling full, after some tiring exploration. Take part in the unique trip to gain some insight on the art of making local handicrafts, which may include weaving or basket-making. The Akha people are also known to produce their own traditional clothing with resources collected from all around the village. The women in the village will grow and spin their own cotton to make cloth, which they will dye with natural indigo, prior to weaving and embellishing the cloth with vibrant embroidery. After an exhausting day, you will head back to your homestay and take a break for the rest of the night.
Day 4 - Hiking to Muang Khua
The moment the Sun rises, you will awaken after a refreshing sleep within a serene environment of the Honglerk village. Hear the sounds of the villagers starting their day as you prepare for your exciting hike along the beaten paths. Begin your journey at the starting point of the trail that will take you through stunning landscapes of lush green forests and towering mountains, at a distance. The entire will requires at least 3 hours to complete, depending on the trail conditions. You will make your way to the small town of Muang Khua, that is a stone’s throw away from the Nam Ou and Nam Pak rivers. Take the chance to explore the town and the main attraction of the town, which is the town’s wet and dry markets.
Day 5 - Departure
Begin your day with a delicious breakfast that is infused with the flavours of Laos before preparing to depart from the Muang Khua town. Say your final farewells to the serene village of Muang Khua and journey back to Luang Prabang on a public (or private) minivan. Admire the stunning nature that thrive in the region as you make your journey back to the ancient city of Luang Prabang.
