Tour Description:

Go on an off-road trip in a hardy 4WD vehicle up and down hills as you travel for a duration of 45 minutes through the Benom range. The destination of this exciting journey is the Lata Berembun waterfall which is one of the best natural treasures the state of Pahang has to offer. Despite how secluded this waterfall’s location is, many travellers will come from afar just to witness the beauty that is the entire image created by the flowing waterfall and its surrounding flora.

Due to its location that is deep within the Benom range, it has a relatively high altitude, and its surrounding forests remain untouched by development. These features lend the waterfall’s area its cooler temperature, as the thick canopy of tall trees does their best to keep most of the sun’s rays out. Upon reaching the waterfalls, let the constant gentle breeze that blows from the powerful cascades of water down the huge granite boulders of Berembun waterfall perk you up.

The strong, cold waters of Berembun waterfall flow down from a series of 7 or so cascades that spread out over the large boulders to splash into a natural pool at the base. This natural pool is beautiful and inviting but is rather deep, so it is recommended that one wears a life jacket if the desire to swim in it cannot be resisted. Besides being good for swimming, the waterfall also creates a perfect backdrop for a pleasant picnic with friends or family on one of the low, large boulders surrounding the pool.

The Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary is dedicated to locating, subduing and translocating problem elephants from habitats that have been encroached upon by irresponsible development. Over 700 wild elephants have been relocated with the efforts of the strong team, preventing further decrease in the numbers of the elephant population. The sanctuary not only houses these elephants, as it is also active in educating the Malaysian public on the plight of the elephants through various public awareness activities.

At the sanctuary live several adult elephants and their calves, with some being orphans. This sanctuary not only serves as a rehabilitation centre for these elephants, but it also trains the elephants themselves in skills that can be used in aiding the translocation efforts of the team. It is recommended that visitors view the video presentation on elephant translocation as it tells of the importance of maintaining and protecting the elephant population in Peninsular Malaysia. Visitors can feed these Asian elephants bananas or sugarcane and bathe with the baby elephants, but if you choose to do the latter don’t forget to bring a change of clothes!

Just a walkable distance away from the sanctuary, there is an Orang Asli village inhabited by the Che Wong. One of the nineteen original Orang Asli groups in Peninsular Malaysia, their houses made of Nipah, bamboo, rattan and wood are definitely worth a visit. These villagers may be shy, but as long as you maintain a pleasant and respectful attitude, they will soon open up to you and you’ll have new friends in no time at all. The Che Wong of this village maintains a semi-nomadic lifestyle, living close to the jungle and benefitting from its resources.
