Stroll through Chinatown to view handicrafts, sample local delicacies and learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine before taking a trishaw ride down to Singapore River for a bumboat cruise!
Step into a world that combines the old and the new: Chinatown in Singapore. In the past, Chinese immigrants made their homes in this enclave full of alleys and narrow streets. While time may have progressed, the culture in the area still remains, keeping a little bit of history within it. As you stroll around Chinatown, you will find a collection of shops and eateries all selling their goods for you to try and buy. Goldsmiths that have been run by generations of a family, teahouses and traditional medicinal halls can all be found here.
Enter a Chinese Medical Hall to learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and how it helps to regulate your Yin and Yang. TCM is a very beneficial method of healing and prevention that makes use of various herbs, roots and other physical methods to drive illness out of the body. It has been proven to work on many patients, hence its popularity and is still being widely practiced by Chinese and non-Chinese alike. More physical treatments to heal the body from within are practices like acupuncture, moxibustion, tai chi and tui na (massage).
Grab some bites as you walk around Chinatown Food Street where rows of hawker stalls, shophouses and kiosks sell local delicacies like char kuay teow (stir-fried flat rice noodles) and satay (barbecued meat skewers). Don’t overeat though, as you’ll be having dinner at a Chinese restaurant that has an array of filling dishes to be shared around for familial harmony. After dinner, check out the Night Market for souvenirs and trinkets. Experience a trishaw ride that will take you down to Clarke Quay through Chinatown’s alleyways.
At Clarke Quay you will embark on a rustic bumboat ride down Singapore River to view the bright cityscape from the water. See buildings lit-up beautifully and reflecting off the water. Know that you’re travelling down a historic waterway on one of the earliest water taxis to be used on Singapore River. As you float peacefully along the calm waters, admire the view of the beautifully-restored shophouses, tall illuminated skyscrapers, preserved colonial buildings and Singapore’s iconic symbol: the Merlion.
