Get a taste of Borneo in this 3-in-1 package tour that takes you to Semenggoh Nature Reserve to meet some orangutans and Fairy Cave for some cavernous exploration, from which you will then bike off-road to hidden gold mines and through the lush tropical rainforests of Borneo!
To begin your adventure, meet up with your guide at Paradesa Borneo’s shop front at Kuching Waterfront at the stipulated departure times. From there, you will be brought by car to the Semenggoh Nature Reserve where you will get to spend some time with orangutans. Orangutans are mammals unique to Southeast Asia with reddish-brown fur and long gangly arms that help them move languidly through the trees.
Extremely smart animals, they will charm you with their wit and win over your heart in no time at all as you watch them go about their lives. At Semenggoh Nature Reserve, endangered orangutans are rescued from captivity and rehabilitated in a natural, enclosed area of rainforest. There are scheduled feeding times when orangutans will descend from their trees and swing by the feeding platform to munch on a menu of fruits.
After witnessing the placid orangutans, you will be taken on a 30-minute drive past verdant pastures to the enchanting Fairy Cave. Sitting 40 metres atop a cliff’s base, visitors need to put in some effort in getting to the cave’s entrance. Four storeys of over 100 concrete steps lead up to the mouth of the cave, where upon reaching the top you will be greeted by an amazing view from above of the valleys of forests and fields spread out below.
Unique rock formations, stalagmites and stalactites make up the interior of Fairy Cave. It is said that one of the rock formations by the entrance of the cave resembles the statue of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Joss sticks are sometimes found stuck into the cracks and crevices by the rock formation by past Buddhist visitors who decided to pay their respects. Moss paints the interior walls of the cave to a lovely, lush green and can be seen in the well-lit cavern as sunlight streams in through a large opening.
After your cave exploration, you will then get on your bike and go on an off-road trip in search of hidden gold mines with your guide. These gold mines are hidden along a spectacular limestone karst landscape and while you may not be able to do your own gold mining there, the visit to and exploration of the mines will connect you to an integral part of Bau’s history as a gold mining town. With all these activities, you must now be famished, so leave the gold mines and pedal into the town of Bau for a hearty lunch! Once you’re recharged, take on the moderate challenge of off-roading up and down the hilly landscape of the gorgeous Borneo rainforests.
