Experience an off-road mountain biking adventure across rainforest terrain to the historical gold mining town of Bau where you will visit Wind Cave and Fairy Cave.
Start off your journey by being driven from the city of Kuching to Tasik Biru, a beautifully reflective lake that appears so richly blue as it reflects the sky. This lake was formed from an open-cast gold mining pit. Once there, you will get onto your mountain bikes and put on your safety gear. This off-road mountain biking adventure will take you down the well-worn trials of jungles to the historical gold mining town of Bau. Bau is home to some of the oldest gold mines in Sarawak, and two of its most famous caves in the area are the Wind Cave and Fairy Cave.
Give your legs a workout as you cycle through the rocky rainforest terrains that will lead you to the caves. The experience gained at both caves is vastly different and well worth your time. Your first stop will be in Wind Cave where there is a 1000-metre long plank walk that disappears into the dark chambers of the cave. Made up of three unlit tubular passages, Wind Cave provides visitors with an authentic cave experience with its dark and moist interiors.
Visitors should definitely have a torchlight with them in order to aid their walking. Do not worry about falling or getting lost as there are railings all along the walkway that are lined with reflective stickers. Notice boards dot the cave and provide educational information on the species of bats that reside in Wind Cave. One of these species is the Dusky Fruit Bat. Swiftlets also roost in the roof of the passages. There is a subterranean stream where visitors can have a picnic by it.
Fairy Cave presents visitors with a slightly more challenging walk. It is an impressive show cave with an entrance sitting 36 metres above the base of the cliff. There is a concrete staircase consisting of over 100 steps leads up to this entrance. Despite this slightly tiring climb, the view you will be rewarded with at the top is worth it. A lush valley of forests and fields spreads out below, a sea of varying green. Ferns grow along the cavern walls, nourished by the abundant bat guano from roosting bats.
