Explore the unique traditions of the Iban culture and be entranced by the enchanting beauty of the lush rainforest surroundings.
Day 1 – Kuching / Batang Ai
We will journey to Batang Ai, set amidst the backdrop of a majestic forest. Keep your eyes peeled on your surroundings as the journey will take you past the countryside; dotted with paddy fields, roadside kampungs, tropical jungles, pepper plantations and farms. We will also be stopping by the Liew Farm which grows much of their own needs and for income. As you stroll along the edge of well-kept plantations, you will be able to admire the main attraction that would be the pepper vines and loofah vegetables. You can even purchase packets of guaranteed fresh pepper if you so wish. We will then move on to our next pit stop, the small town of Lachau for a delicious lunch before continuing our journey. Upon our arrival at Batang Ai Dam, we will experience an upriver journey as we are ferried across to the AIMAN Batang Ai Longhouse Resort, nestled at the edge of one of the world’s oldest rainforests. You are left to explore the beautiful surroundings at your own leisure.
Day 2 – Batang Ai Iban Longhouse
We will kick-start the day with a nice breakfast at the guest house before we begin the day’s adventures with an upriver journey, aboard a native boat along the Batang Ai Lake. The famous Ibans were once the most fearsome pirates and headhunters but now live harmoniously as farmers, fishing and hunting in the surrounding jungles. The highlight of the tour would be the traditional welcome with maidens in ceremonial regalia and the performance of the traditional Ngajat dance upon arrival at the longhouse.
Discover the importance of the longhouse in the life and times of the Sarawakian Land Dayaks (Bidayuh) and really connect with the indigenous people. Admire their simplistic lifestyle and their ingenious methods of making the best of whatever nature provides them—winnowing, basket weaving and rice pounding—to get by. Be adventurous and explore the longhouse; take a peek at the human skulls kept at the “head-house”, or more commonly known as “baruk”—the most unique and important structure of the Bidayuh. Away from urbanisation, this feels like a different epoch but may foster a deeper appreciation for the simple way of life. Enjoy your time here as you are served with a cup of rice wine, tuak, brewed by the natives and get ready to take part in the exciting activity of using the blowpipe and be amazed by cockfight demonstrations by the tribespeople.
To appease our hunger, we will take a boat ride to enjoy a picnic lunch on the riverbanks. Learn the traditional way of cooking using bamboo and BBQ over stone pits. Discover what type of bamboo to collect and how to prepare the food for cooking in the bamboo containers as well as the stone pits and meat for grilling. After your appetite has been satisfied, we will return to the resort for the day.
