Discover the unique customs and traditions of the Iban Tribe culture and admire the serene rainforest scenery.
Day 1 - Kuching / Batang Ai Iban Longhouse
Join us on an informative tour to the Batang Ai Iban Longhouse set amidst the backdrop of a majestic forest. As one of the largest tribes in Sarawak, this presents the perfect opportunity to have close-up encounters with the tribe. Keep your eyes peeled on your surroundings as the journey will take you past the countryside; dotted with paddy fields, roadside kampungs, tropical jungles, pepper plantations and farms. We will also be stopping by a small town, Serian and later on Lachau for a delicious lunch. Upon our arrival at Batang Ai Dam, we will experience an upriver journey onboard a native boat towards an Iban Longhouse.
Settle in the longhouse as your guide will prepare you a native dinner and we will enjoy ceremoniously with a cup of rice wine, tuak, brewed by the natives. Enjoy your night with the rest of the longhouse folks in music and dance. Discover the importance of the longhouse in the life and times of the Sarawakian Land Dayaks (Bidayuh) and really connect with the indigenous people. Admire their simplistic lifestyle and their ingenious methods of making the best of whatever nature provides them—winnowing, basket weaving and rice pounding—to get by. Be adventurous and explore the longhouse; take a peek at the human skulls kept at the “head-house”, or more commonly known as “baruk”—the most unique and important structure of the Bidayuh. Away from urbanisation, this feels like a different epoch but may foster a deeper appreciation for the simple way of life.
As the evening winds down, gifts may be presented to the Iban and small tokens will be shared equally amongst all that are present. Simple, inexpensive gifts such as children’s books, cookies, candy, pencils are well liked and appreciated. Experience an overnight stay at the longhouse. A note of caution, however, dogs are a close part of the family and you may find yourself sleeping near one!
Day 2 - Batang Ai Iban Longhouse / Kuching
We will have a nice breakfast at the guest house before taking part in the exciting activity of blowpipe and cockfight demonstrations by the tribespeople. We will then proceed for a nature walk, visiting the native farms as well as their traditional Iban burial ground before travelling back down the river to catch the coach back to Kuching city. On your journey back, we will stop at a local cafe for lunch before proceeding to drop you back at your city hotel.
