Discover the wonderful taste of Northern Thailand cuisine in a relaxing culinary bike tour!
Located in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is the largest city in the northern part of Thailand. The city is very different from the ever-busy Bangkok. It is a wonderfully laid-back city, full of history and charm. Not only it has scenic views and rich cultures, the food in Chiang Mai is also very palatable. In fact, its taste is different from the other parts of Thailand. Our tour brings you for a marvellous food trip on Northern Thailand’s cuisine.
We will meet at the meeting point near Chiang Mai Gate before we depart for a short briefing and bike fitting. A welcome snack of Chiang Mai chewing tea is also prepared before we start our journey. Our first stop on the food tour will be at the city’s navel. You can taste different kinds of tropical fruits found in Thailand here. Miss Nong has been selling fruit juice here for almost 10 years and we could taste her 100% fresh fruit juice. To go along with the fruit juice will be a tasty Chiang Mai street sweet.
Next, we will visit the Wat Intakin for a brief moment. It is the original site of the city pillar which is the exact centre of the city and therefore named the city’s belly button. We can listen to monks chanting here and witness the majestic 700-year-old White Buddha. We get to learn about the colourful history and rich culture of Chiang Mai too. As the sun slowly sets, we ride to the final temple of our food tour to learn a bit more about Buddhism and merit making.
Upon reaching the food market after a short ride, we stop at a green papaya salad food stall to order some Chiang Mai style ‘Tom Sum’ for our dinner. Then we will tour the market to gain more knowledge about northern Thai food. Along the streets, we can see people making chilli paste and many other delicious looking foods. The aroma is further enhanced when we pass by stalls selling curries, stews or soups. There are so many foods to choose from, everyone will be able to find something that suits their appetite. Worry not there will be nothing strange or weird like bugs or snakes. After finish shopping, we will return to the Som Tum stall and unpack what we bought from the market. Before we indulge ourselves with the gastronomic wonders of Chiang Mai cuisine, we will get a tutorial on how to properly eat sticky rice which is the staple of Northern Thai food. The guide will also explain some of the Chiang Mai traditions regarding food.
On our way to the last stop of our bike tour, we will be treated for some typical and rare Shan or Tai Yai snack. The final stop will be for the Mae Salong tea and a traditional Thai dessert in a peaceful riverside setting to enjoy and relax. Then, with filled tummies, we slowly cycle through the streets and alleys of Chiang Mai and back to our meeting point to end the wonderful food adventure.
