Take on the challenge of the Walk the Torq route on the Via Ferrata of Mount Kinabalu and be rewarded with scenic views of the sunrise and lush valleys!
Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu / Kinabalu Park / Timpohon Gate / Pendant Hut / Laban Rata Rest House
The first stop on our adventure is Kinabalu Park, which is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site and is also the Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia. The Park is home to over 5,000 vascular plant species and around 90 lowland mammal species, among many others. The star attraction of the Park is none other than Mount Kinabalu, which is also the reason as to why you’re here. Once at the park, your guide will arrange all necessary registration for you and assign a mountain guide to you whom you’ll be sharing with some other guests.
At 10:00 am, you will be transferred from the Park headquarters to Timpohon Gate, the primary entry point to climbing Mount Kinabalu. This gate is the first checkpoint from the Park’s office and is usually taken by climbers in the morning. It is housed within a large house that has a small convenience store – should you want to stock up before starting your climb proper, and an observatory platform on top from which you can view the valley and Mount Kinabalu’s western ridge. From here, you will start hiking up to Pendant Hut which is a good distance away. The duration that is taken to get there usually ranges from 4 to 6 hours. Pendant Hut will be where you will rest for the night. After your arrival, settle into the Alpine-inspired hut and make some new friends. There is the mandatory Via Ferrata safety briefing that all climbers, be they first-timers or veteran mountaineers, have to attend. You will be briefed step by step on what you will be doing, from your hike up to the summit to wearing the harness and working the carabiners. Here is also where you’ll meet your Mountain Torq trainer. Laban Rata restaurant is a short walk away and is where you’ll be having your dinner. After dinner, settle in for bed at Pendant Hut by 8:00 pm.
Day 2 – Pendant Hut / Mount Kinabalu Summit / Low’s Peak / Sayat Sayat Hut / Pendant Hut / Timpohon Gate / Kinabalu Park / Kota Kinabalu
You’ll have an early start to your day today by waking up at 1:30 am for an early supper. By 2:30 am, you’ll start your journey towards Mount Kinabalu’s summit, 4,095.2 metres above sea level. This should take approximately 3 hours. Around 5:40 am, you should reach the summit just in time to catch the beautiful sunrise. It is a sight that is out of this world, especially if the clouds are lying low on the day you climb. After admiring the sunrise, descend from Low’s Peak to meet your Mountain Torq trainer. You will then meet your Via Ferrata trainer at Sayat Sayat Hut to be guided along your Walk the Torq route along Via Ferrata.
This route is on Asia’s first Via Ferrata, which is also the world’s second highest at 3,200 to 3,800 metres above sea level. Walk the Torq is designed with beginner climbers in mind, allowing for a leisure 2 to 3-hour climb along the protected mountain path. On this Via Ferrata, beginners can access scenic sections of the mountains that are typically only available to experienced rock climbers and mountaineers. It is a safe and controlled environment in which one can experience the exciting challenges that climbing brings in the safest of conditions. With your heart and soul filled with the climb, it is now time to fill your stomach with food. At 9:30 am, return to Pendant Hut for a well-deserved breakfast after your scenic climb.
After breakfast, pack up and check-out of Pendant Hut and begin the trek down to Timpohon Gate. Once there, you will be transferred back to Kinabalu Park and should arrive before late afternoon. At the Park headquarters, you will collect your climb certificate as proof of participation and completion. With pride in your heart, enjoy a hearty buffet lunch at Balsam Restaurant. Later, you will meet with your guide again and depart to Kota Kinabalu, a trip which should take from 2 to 3 hours.
