Shop and snack at Nabalu Market before climbing to Low’s Peak on Mount Kinabalu to catch the glorious sunset from above the clouds.
Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu / Nabalu Market / Kinabalu Park
Enjoy a 2-hour drive to Kinabalu Park that takes you through the quiet, pleasant countryside. If you ride with the windows down, you can inhale the fresh unpolluted countryside air as you admire the tranquil views of humble local villages and the beautifully uniform paddy fields lovingly cared for by the villagers. Greet busy locals going about their day with a smile and you’ll get one in return, too. You’ll be stopping by Nabalu Market before arriving at Kinabalu Park for some sightseeing.
At Nabalu Market, you can stroll through various stalls to shop and snack. Everything here is cheaper than it is in the city, so get some good deals out of the visit while you’re there. You should be able to find lovely little handicrafts to buy as souvenirs and enjoy some local snacks as you walk along. There is a 15-metre tall watchtower located there as well which grants you a clear view of Mount Kinabalu’s formidable peak once you’ve climbed to the top of the watchtower. This is the perfect opportunity for a selfie!
Leave Nabalu Market and ride for about 45 minutes more to your accommodation at Kinabalu Park. Kinabalu Park is Malaysia’s first site to be given the title of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also proudly the Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia and boasts over 5,000 vascular plant species to be explored by visitors. Around 90 lowland mammal species also can be found here. Register for check-in at your accommodation then settle in and relax until dinner time.
Day 2 - Park HQ / Timp. Gate. Ascend Mount Kinabalu / Laban Rata
Wake up fresh-faced and prepared for the first part of your trek on this trip. Have a good breakfast and be at the Park Headquarters by 7:00 am. There you will register yourself for your climb, receive your ID tag and meet your experienced mountain guide who will teach you all that you need to do in preparation for the trek. Remember to always keep your ID tag on your person at all times as it is an extremely important piece of information in case of any emergencies. Once all that has been done, head to Timpohon Gate to begin your climb!
The trek up to the accommodation at Laban Rata will take about 4 to 5 hours of hard work. The challenge not only lies in the duration and energy needed to get there, but the altitude and temperature also pose extra challenges for all climbers to endure and overcome. Despite how tiring it may be, the climb up will be filled with magnificent aerial views of the hills and forests of Kinabalu Park below. Arrive at Laban Rata and have yourself a good, rewarding dinner before catching a good night’s sleep before tomorrow’s trek.
Day 3 - Low's Peak / Descend Mount Kinabalu / Kota Kinabalu
Wake up early to still-dark skies to have supper in preparation for the trek up to Low’s Peak. Higher you will climb up a route that is already challenging enough without the external factors of altitude and climate. You will get to feel your body strengthening itself as you go on, enduring through all the challenges you will face on the trek. The view of the glorious sunrise over the clouds will absolutely make the difficult trek worth it, though.
At 4,095 metres above sea level, Low’s Peak allows for climbers a magnificent view of the brightening sky going through various colour palettes as the sun rises and shines upon the beautiful earth. When the sun has fully risen and is shining at its brightest in the sky, head back down to Laban Rate where you can enjoy a proper breakfast to refill your empty stomach and provide you with some energy to make the trek back down to Timpohon Gate. Receive a Certificate of Achievement for your climb at the Park HQ. Before heading back to Kota Kinabalu, reward yourself with a much-deserved buffet lunch at Balsam Restaurant.
