Brave Low’s Peak Circuit on Mount Kinabalu’s beautiful Via Ferrata and be rewarded with a view from the mountain that cannot be seen on other routes!
Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu / Kinabalu Park / Timpohon Gate / Pendant Hut / Laban Rata Rest House
Meet your guide between 6:00 am to 6:30 am to depart to Kinabalu Park and arrive by 8:30 am. Kinabalu Parks boasts the title of being Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site, and it is also the Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia with its collection of more than 5,000 vascular plant species. There are also around 90 lowland mammal species that make the Park their home. Mount Kinabalu is, of course, the main attraction at the Park. At the Park, your guide will arrange all the necessary registration for you as well as assign you to a mountain guide.
You will be transferred to Timpohon Gate from the Park headquarters at 9:00 am. Timpohon Gate is the primary entry point to climbing Mount Kinabalu and is the first checkpoint from the Park’s office. The Gate is housed in a large house that includes a small convenience store and an observatory platform on the top. You can stock up on high-energy snacks at the store and get a quick glimpse of the valley and Mount Kinabalu’s western ridge from the platform. Leave for Pendant Hut by foot, hiking for a good 4 to 6 hours.
Pendant Hut is an Alpine-inspired hut, and this is where you will make your bed for the night. Upon arrival at around 3:00 pm, settle in and attend the mandatory briefing on Via Ferrata safety. All first-timers and experienced mountaineers alike have to attend the briefing, during which information on your hike up to the summit, wearing of the harness and how to work the carabiners will be given, step by step. You will also get to meet your Mountain Torq trainer here. Rest your feet for an hour or so, then take a short walk down to Laban Rata Resthouse where you will have your dinner. After dinner, head back to Pendant Hut and try to get enough sleep.
Day 2 – Pendant Hut / Mount Kinabalu Summit / Low’s Peak / Sayat Sayat Hut / Pendant Hut / Timpohon Gate / Kinabalu Park / Kota Kinabalu
Wake up at 1:30 am for an early supper before starting your climb. By 2:30 am, you should be leaving the comfort of Pendant Hut to head for Mount Kinabalu’s summit, which sits 4,095.2 metres above sea level. Your travel time should take approximately 3 hours. Reach the summit by 5:40 am to be just in time for the sunrise. The sight of the sunrise from the summit will transport you to a paradise where the sky is multi-coloured and the valleys are soft, fluffy clouds. At 6:00 am, descend from Low’s Peak to meet your Mountain Torq trainer. You will be led to the 7.5-kilometre mark to meet your Via Ferrata trainer to guide you through your Low’s Peak Circuit activity on Via Ferrata.
Mount Kinabalu’s Via Ferrata is Asia’s first and is also proudly the world’s second highest at 3,200 to 3,800 metres above sea level. The Via Ferrata allows for beginners to access scenic sections of the mountains that are usually only accessible to experienced climbers and mountaineers. The Low’s Peak Circuit route is one that no one should miss out on, not even seasoned mountaineers who have taken on Mount Kinabalu before, as on this route you will get to see an entirely different and incredibly gorgeous side of the plateau that the regular summit trail is unable to show you. Just before the blazing hot hour of noon, at 11:00 am, make your way back to Pendant Hut for a well-earned breakfast.
After your breakfast, pack up your belongings and check-out of Pendant Hut. You will trek back down to Timpohon Gate, where you will be transferred back to Kinabalu Park. After about 4 hours of trekking, you should arrive at the Gate, and then you will be taken back to Kinabalu Park to receive your climb certificate of participation and completion. Enjoy a hearty buffet lunch at Balsam Restaurant, then meet with your guide once again and depart to Kota Kinabalu.
