Get ready for an adventure as you discover Ipoh’s wonderful limestone caves before you learn about the interesting stories of how Ipoh came to be with its iconic colonial influenced buildings.
Day 1 - Free & Easy
The journey begins with a friendly meet and greet with our representative. We will then transfer to your hotel where you will be checked in.
Ipoh started off as a small village by Kinta River in the 1820s. During the tin rush under the British ruling in the 1870s, the city flourished as British businessmen opened up tin-mining companies. Ipoh’s colonial importance still shines today as it was the second administrative centre of Malaya during the British colonial rule.
Ipoh today is known for its exquisite local dishes and hawkers such as the bean sprout chicken (‘nga choy kai’), soya bean curd (‘tau fu fah’) and Ipoh white coffee. The city is also home to many historical buildings as result to the British colonial rule. Famous attractions include the Birch Memorial Clocktower, Ipoh Railway Station, Muzium Darul Ridzuan and Kong Heng Square.
Dinner will be served for your enjoyment at a local restaurant. You are free to explore Ipoh Town at your own leisure before returning to the hotel to rest for the day.
Day 2 - Gua Kandu / Gaharu Tea Valley / Kellie’s Castle
Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast at the hotel to kick start your day. We will begin the day’s adventure in Gopeng where Gua Kandu will be ready for your exploration. One of Perak’s most exciting caves, you will need to climb up a short distance to find the entrance to the cave. Even though it is relatively dark inside, this limestone cave’s beauty can be admired with the slightest light source.
It is advisable to dress in long pants, gloves and bring along your own torch or preferably a headlamp as it is a hands-on knees experience. Let the adventurous side of you take over as you abseil within the cave. As most limestone caves, stalactites and stalagmites graze its interior. Venturing through the cave, you will come upon many rock formations and their unique shapes.
After coming into the light at the end of Gua Kandu, we will proceed towards Gaharu Tea Valley. Gaharu Tea Valley is an agarwood plantation which has evolved into an agrotourism destination. Agarwood is treasured for its compelling, exotic scent and beneficial as well as medicinal properties that is produced in the resin when the Gaharu tree is infected with mould. Its high commercial value has rendered the agarwood an endangered specimen. You can also purchase some memorabilia at the Gaharu Retail Shop before we depart.
To appease your hunger, lunch will be served a local restaurant before we head towards Batu Gajah for our last stop for the day, Kellie’s Castle. Kellie’s Castle was meant to be Scottish Planter, William Kellie Smith’s, home away from home in the 20th century. The mansion was planned to be built as a six-storey tower with majestic columns. Kellie’s Castle was the dream palace of the owner comprising of a moat, a rooftop tennis court, an underground cellar and even secret tunnels.
Strangely enough, many of his workers caught the Spanish flu and died. However, construction only came to an abrupt halt upon the untimely demise of Kellie in the 1920s. Today the castle stands as a symbol of a beautiful and bygone era of a once forsaken romance. After the eventful day, you will be transferred back to the hotel. In the evening, dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
Day 3 - Limestone Cave Temple / Ipoh Old Town
Begin the day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel followed by a quick check out. Our first stop will be a visit to the Limestone Cave Temple called the Perak Cave Temple. The highlight of the famous Perak Cave Temple is a 40 feet tall golden sitting Buddha statue. By his sides are four guardian deities. Vibrantly coloured murals adorn the cavern walls illustrating characters and events from Buddhist scriptures and Chinese mythology.
The walls are also covered in Chinese calligraphy, some of which were painted by the son of the late founders of the Perak Cave Temple. Much further into the attraction, are gazebos and pavilions all around for visitors to sit and enjoy their surroundings. If you are looking for some adventure, you could climb the 450 steps to the pinnacle of the Perak Cave Temple and reward yourself with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of Ipoh.
This beautiful state is rich in colonial influence and is known greatly for its historical buildings such as the Birch Memorial Clocktower and the Muzium Darul Ridzuan, which is a must-visit as it is one of Perak’s best museums. The Birch Memorial Clocktower is a dedication to J.W.W. Birch, Perak’s first British resident. This building has intricate details such as the bell once used in London’s Big Ben, and perched at the top of the tower are four stunning terracotta figures, a representation of the four virtues of British administration (justice, patience, loyalty and fortitude).
Even though many of the buildings are very old, these timeless structures exude beauty and charm that only buildings of such history can carry. One of the city’s most iconic structures would be the Ipoh Railway Station, one of three grand railway stations built by the British. Also known to locals as the Taj Mahal of Ipoh, this iconic architecture has a Moorish Indian design comprising of high arches and majestic domes.
All built in an elegant neoclassic style, the Town Hall and the Ipoh law courts are located just across from the Ipoh Railway station. Arriving at the Kong Heng Square, you will be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the many boutique hotels, hawker stalls, antique shops, art galleries and cafes. So make sure to get your wallets out because it is time to shop! After you are done with your shopping sprees, our adventure will come to an end and you will be transferred back.
