Learn the ways of becoming a Mahout by visiting the Elephant Village Camp that is located a stone’s throw away from the ancient city of Luang Prabang!
Explore the wonders of the ancient city of Luang Prabang, which is also known as the “city of the Golden Buddha Phra Bang”, that is located at the northern part of Laos. In 1995, the Luang Prabang was given the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the city is filled with stunning grand palaces and an abundance of more than 30 glistening Wats (‘temples’) that are found all around the city. Traverse through to the Elephant Village Camp that is a stone’s throw away from the Luang Prabang, where you will have a chance to experience firsthand meeting and interacting with the friendly giants that roam in the camp. The Elephant Village Camp was first established in 2001 as an elephant sanctuary to provide aid to the elephants in need from responsible tourism.
Upon arrival to the elephant camp, you will be greeted by the local guide and then you will be given a short briefing regarding the elephants in the camp. Fill the reusable aluminium water bottles as a way to save the environment by reducing the usage of plastic bottles. Interact with the friendly giants in the camp during the elephant feeding session where you will have a chance to give treats to the elephants and watch them wrap the treats around their trunks and devour the food.
Then, you will set foot to the Elephant Village Camp and learn about the elephants by visiting the local museum and photo gallery, where you will gain some insight on elephants in Laos and admire the stunning pictures of the elephants. Encounter the elephant hospital where you will have a chance to visit the place where elephants get treatment for any ailments or injuries they may be experiencing. Then, you will have the opportunity to learn the art of papermaking from elephant dung from the local experts in the area.
Become a newbie Mahout by learning how to ride and control an elephant, which will be taught by the local expert Mahout in the camp! Then, you will have a chance to explore the stunning nature that surrounds the camp as you ride bareback atop the docile elephants along a one kilometer long river. Upon reaching the end of the river, you will stumble upon two adorable baby elephants that roam around their home in the jungle.
After such an exciting adventure through the jungle, you will be provided with a scrumptious meal that will surely arouse your taste buds that is served buffet-style with tea or coffee and a refreshing drinking water. After lunch, you will have the opportunity to bathe the friendly elephants in the Nam Khan River river that flows through Luang Prabang. Traverse to the stunning Tad Sae Waterfall on a traditional Laos longboat, where you will have the opportunity to relax in nature and swim along the crystal clear water that constantly flows. After an exhausting day, you will make your way back with a desire for more adventures and memories that will last for a lifetime.
