See nesting Green turtles in an exciting adventure together with Orangutans and Sun Bears, followed by an amazing tour of the beautiful Sandakan City!
Day 1 - Turtle Islands National Park
Your adventure begins with a short ride to the Sandakan Jetty where we will take a boat ride towards Selingan Island. This island features the first turtle hatchery in Malaysia opened on 1st August 1966, funded entirely by the Sabah state government. This beautiful island is also surrounded by crystal clear waters and beautiful corals, where it is perfect for you to relax, swim and snorkel the day away!
During the day, learn about the conservation of these turtles; witness the collecting of eggs from the nesting site, planting them in the hatchery and see baby turtles scrambling to the open sea upon released on the shore. After dinner, prepare yourself for an experience of a lifetime as the Park Rangers will bring you to see the sight of Green turtles laying eggs. Visitors are allowed into the hatchery to observe the further work of the rangers: the transplantation of the freshly laid eggs into a man-made incubation chamber!
Day 2 - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / City Tour
We will be checking out of the lodge at 6.30am and begin your day with a boat ride back to Sandakan; followed by an approximate 35-minute drive towards Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned and injured Orangutans are brought to be rehabilitated to be returned to the wild. Sepilok features a primary lowland forest which is also a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rainforests; this gives visitors a perfect opportunity to view the elusive Orangutans in their natural habitat. There is a boardwalk which leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the apes are fed milk and bananas at 10 am.
Next, we are off to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch before heading back for a tour around the beautiful city! Our first stop will be at the Central Market, where it is famous for their amazing variety of fresh seafood and agricultural products. Next, we will head towards Sim-Sim Water Village, a picturesque village built on stilts by the coast of Sandakan. Built in 1879. This original Sandakan settlement is accessible with plank walkways and the quaint village depicts the life of local fishermen and their families in their daily activities.
Last but not least, We will head to Puu Jih Syh Buddhist Temple that is situated on the hilltop of Tanah Merah. This beautiful temple was built in 1987 and officiated by Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the Chief Minister of Sabah at the time. It is also the largest Chinese temple located in the city and offers an amazing panoramic view of Sandakan Bay that is not to be missed. Fun fact: this temple was once featured in the American television series, ‘The Amazing Race Season 4’ back in 2003!
