Explore Tra Que Herb Village and experience tending to a vegetable garden!
Instead of taking the usual car or minivan, you will take a bicycle trip to a small village at the edge of Hoi An. Tra Que herb village is named after a herb that holds the smell of a camellia flower (Tra) and the spice of cinnamon (Que). Nowhere else in the country owns such distinct, fresh and flavorful herb like Tra Que does. When arriving at the village, surround yourself with the scenic countryside: laid out gardens, glassy shiny lakes, and hard-working villagers.
Tra Que is well-known for its organic farms. No chemical is used in the farming procedure. The locals make use of a specific kind of seaweed in De Vong lake and use it as manure for the plants. Perhaps this is the reason behind the village’s flavorful and tasty herbs.
After the short sightseeing, become a gardener yourself. Your fellow local workers for one day will show you how to rake the soil, sow, water the veggies or catch some worms. In addition, learn about the special manure of the place. Work alongside the locals, both enjoy and appreciate the amount of hard work is put into each small plant. Take a break from the gardening and get in the kitchen to help the locals prepare lunch, using the very herbs from the garden. Make some of both the middle of Vietnam and Tra Que’s special such as tam huu spring rolls, banh xeo or Quang noodles. These delicacies will taste so much better here, not only because you yourself help to make them but also for the village’s herbs: the herbs are so flavorful and have such distinct taste and aroma.
Take a short nap before helping the locals with gardening again. You will help the villagers to harvest and wrap the herbs and veggies, so they are ready to be sold to customers and restaurants. Bid goodbye to the lovely and friendly Tra Que gardeners as you hit back on the road with your bicycle. On the way back, stop to pay a visit to Yajirobe Tani’s tomb. He is a Japanese who came to Hoi An port for trading decades ago. However, instead of going back to his home country, he decided to stay as he fell in love with a Vietnamese woman. It will be around 2 p.m. when you reach your hotel. This marks the end of a short farming trip.
