Get up close with the Iban natives, the former Head Hunters of Borneo, for a truly authentic experience of Sarawakian culture.
Day 1 - Kuching / Nanga Sumpa
The tour begins at 8 am where you will be ferried from your hotel in Kuching to Batang Ai Reservoir. Before that, stop by Lachau Bazaar where you can find an assortment of smoked, salted and packaged goods. Stroll around the market and take in the sights of vividly coloured Batiks before stopping for an early lunch at a local coffee shop. Once you have had your fill of grub, it is time to journey onwards to rural Sarawak where you will pass by pepper gardens as well as cocoa and rubber plantations.
Upon arrival, we will enjoy a 1.5 hours ride via longboat upstream to the Nanga Sumpa, where the original inhabitants of Borneo Island—the Ibans—call home. Formerly known as the Sea Dayaks, the native Ibans are known for the prowess in battle because of their headhunting tradition in the bygone days. Now, they are a peaceful tribe that prioritises an agrarian way of life while maintaining their rich heritage and identity. Check in at the Nanga Sumpa Lodge for an overnight stay and then proceed to mingle with the warm and amiable natives who are more than willing to extend their hospitality.
Day 2 - Nanga Sumpa / Enseluai Waterfall / Nanga Sumpa
The second day will be packed with fun-filled activities so make sure to grab a good breakfast before we head into the jungle and tread on muddy trails along the river. Continue upriver by longboat to the picturesque Enseluai Waterfall. En route to the waterfall, your boatman might stop to demonstrate the Iban-style of fishing by net casting. Then, enjoy the sparkling waterfall as you relax and take a dip into cool waters. Replenish your energy with a riverside BBQ lunch courtesy of your Iban hosts before returning to the lodge.
Savour a scrumptious dinner before visiting the Nanga Sumpa Longhouse where you can lay back and laze on the ruai—a common verandah—and spend time with the natives while enjoying a cup of local rice wine. Join in the revelry and have a great time mingling with the Ibans before turning in for the night.
Day 3 - Nanga Sumpa / Kuching
Spend the last day of the tour splashing around in the river or explore the surrounding area of Nanga Sumpa, committing it all to memory. After an early lunch, head downriver to the Batang Ai Lake Jetty where you will be ferried overland to Kuching. Expect to arrive back at 6.30 pm where you will be dropped off at the hotel or Kuching airport.
