Experience the complete Taman Negara adventure where you'll see rare wildlife, explore ancient caves and take in all the splendours of this 130-million-year-old rainforest!
Day 1 - Kuala Lumpur / Kuala Tahan Jetty / Mutiara Taman Negara Resort
Your journey starts with your departure from Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur, and upon your arrival at Kuala Tembeling, you will have to register for an Entry Permit and a Camera License at the Department of Wildlife. After that, a boat will take you to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort where you will register for and check-in to your chalet. In the afternoon, you are free to use your time as you please.
At 5:00 pm, there will be a video show at the Interpretive Centre on the types of wildlife that you can discover in Taman Negara. Once that is over, you can make your way to Seri Mutiara Restaurant where you will be able to enjoy a buffet dinner and make preparations for the night’s activity, the Night Jungle Walk.
On this night walk, you will trek through the dark jungle with only your torchlight and the guidance of your guide, who will ensure that you are safe as well as educate you on the plants, insects and animals you may come across. From a distance, you might spot some creepy-crawlies making their way through the night such as giant millipedes, giant stick insects, moths and scorpions.
Deer and wild boars make common appearances, while owls and slow lorises are sights a little rarer. You might also happen upon a hungry, wandering tapir! After your educational and exciting Night Jungle Walk, make your way back to your chalet and give yourself a mindful rest before tomorrow’s activities.
Day 2 - Kumbang Hide / Night Wildlife Viewing
At 7:30 am, make your way to Seri Mutiara Restaurant for your nutritious breakfast and stock up on your energy levels before your trek to Kumbang Hide. Any items that you intend to bring with you on this trek should be declared at the Department of Wildlife. Once you’re all set, off you go to Kuala Trenggan! You will be having your lunch en route.
You can expect to arrive at Kumbang Hide around 3:30 pm, well before the sun sets, for optimum trekking. Dinner will be prepared by your guide. While you wait, you can prepare for the observation of animals at the salt lick and for your sleep during your overnight stay at Kumbang Hide. When night falls, keep watch as animals such as tapirs and deer emerge from the jungle to get their mineral supplement at the salt lick.
Your ears will also be filled with the raucous chorus of frogs, cicadas, crickets and birds. Do not worry if you miss the sightings of the first few animals, as they will come back to the salt lick throughout the night.
Day 3 - Gua Kepayang Besar / Gua Kepayang Kecil
Your guide will prepare your breakfast, and in the meantime, you can pack up and get ready for another trek, this time from Kumbang Hide to Gua Kepayang Besar and Gua Kepayang Kecil. Located deep within the jungle, they are relatively undisturbed limestone caves. Gua Kepayang Besar’s roof is covered with thousands and thousands of roosting bats, and swiftlets call the cave their home, too. In the large chamber of Gua Kepayang Besar is where you will make your bed tonight.
Lunch and dinner are also prepared by your guide, so sit back and relax or lend a helping hand if you’d like. Wind down from today’s trek in the unique atmosphere of the cave.
Day 4 - Kuala Keniam / Gua Daun Menari / Gua Luas / Kuala Perkai
After breakfast, you will be trekking from Gua Kapayang Besar to Kuala Keniam. Stops will be made along the way to visit Gua Daun Menari and Gua Luas. Be entranced by the leaves dancing in the breeze at the mouth of Gua Daun Menari, bringing the cave’s name to life.
Gua Luas is a smaller cave that is perched upon Bukit Batu Luas, which is the tallest limestone hill in the vicinity. Once you’re done with your sightseeing, continue on your trek to Kuala Keniam, where a boat will wait to transport you to Kuala Perkai. You guide will prepare your lunch and dinner there.
At night, join in the fun of night fishing after being shown the ropes and try your hand at catching some fish! Fishing at night presents a new and exciting set of challenges that you will be sure to feel proud of yourself for overcoming. Return to your tent on land after you’ve had your fun and get some sleep.
Day 5 - Mutiara Taman Negara / Rapids Shooting / Orang Asli Settlement
Besides your breakfast, a morning fishing trip will wake you up, so go out and catch more fish and have that for your lunch! A boat will take you back to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, but before you actually arrive you will embark on an adrenaline-filled activity of rapids shooting. Your boatman will navigate seven sets of mild rapids between Kuala Trenggan and Kuala Tahan. Prepare to get wet as you splash through rapids at the expert hand of your boatman!
If possible, you will stop by an Orang Asli settlement where you can take some time to make a few new friends and learn some practical skills from their way of life. Be awed by how their traditional practices have withstood the call of time and modernity, and have even enabled them to prosper in their own way. At 4:00 pm you should be back at the resort, and the rest of the afternoon is yours to spend as you like.
For dinner, you have a buffet waiting for you at Seri Mutiara Restaurant. Have your fill of delicious food, and tuck yourself into bed after. Try to fall asleep despite the excitement for the next day’s activities, as the rest will only make things better.
Day 6 - Canopy Walkway / Teresek Hill / Lata Berkoh
It’s your last day of planned activities at Taman Negara and we’re going all out by experiencing both land and water activities! First, you will trek to Teresek Hill and then go on the Canopy Walkway. On the trek, do not be disappointed if sightings of animals are scarce, as many are inactive during the day. Nonetheless, you can still appreciate the relative calmness of the jungle, especially towards noon.
At the top of Teresek Hill, feel free to take as many pictures as you want of Gunung Tahan’s tall summit against the backdrop of the sky if it can be seen. Trek back down and go onto the Canopy Walkway that hangs from 25 – 50m off the ground, secured to the tops of trees. Sway excitingly from the rope bridge and enjoy the sea of green surrounding you.
Next on the itinerary is a boat trip to Lata Berkoh, the home of cascading waterfalls and natural pools and jacuzzis. It’s practically a spa created by nature! Swim in the water with the litters of old, tall trees along the perimeter of the shore guiding you. When you’ve been rejuvenated, you can return to the resort for another buffet dinner at Seri Mutiara Restaurant.
Day 7 - Kuala Tahan Jetty / Kuala Lumpur
On your last day of the trip, have your breakfast at Seri Mutiara Restaurant and check-out from your chalet. It is time to bid Taman Negara farewell. At 1:30pm, a bus will pick you up at Kuala Tahan, and send you off to Kuala Lumpur.
