Enjoy a full day of adventure filled with Orangutans, sightseeing and amazing views in beautiful Sandakan!
Begin your adventure for the day with an approximate 35-minute drive towards Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned and injured Orangutans are brought to be rehabilitated to be returned to the wild. Sepilok features a primary lowland forest which is also a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rainforests; this gives visitors a perfect opportunity to view the elusive Orangutans in their natural habitat. There is a boardwalk which leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the apes are fed milk and bananas at 10:00 am.
After our exciting adventure with the Orangutans in the morning, we will proceed to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch before heading back for a tour around the beautiful city! Our first stop will be at the Central Market, where it is famous for their amazing variety of fresh seafood and agricultural products. Next, we will head towards Sim-Sim Water Village, a picturesque village built on stilts by the coast of Sandakan. Built in 1879. This original Sandakan settlement is accessible with plank walkways and the quaint village depicts the life of local fishermen and their families in their daily activities.
Last but not least, We will head to Puu Jih Syh Buddhist Temple that is situated on the hilltop of Tanah Merah. This beautiful temple was built in 1987 and officiated by Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the Chief Minister of Sabah at the time. It is also the largest Chinese temple located in the city and offers an amazing panoramic view of Sandakan Bay that is not to be missed. Fun fact: this temple was once featured in the American television series, ‘The Amazing Race Season 4’ back in 2003!
