Experience an excursion that takes you on both land and sea; explore a quaint fishing village, a mosque and a six-tiered Buddhist temple.
This exciting tour offers exploration on both land and sea! It begins with a short one hour drive to Port Klang from your hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The largest and one of the busiest ports in the country, it is now known for seafood; tasty, fresh crabs and a hearty steamboat meal are sought after culinary delights by both the locals and foreigners. Once at the port, a half hour ferry ride will bring you to Pulau Ketam. The mangrove swamp, fish farms and busy harbour provide quite a sight for first-timers.
One striking feature of Pulau Ketam is the quaint fishing village that is built entirely on stilt, supported above the swamp. As you walk around, mud crabs, marshland birds and Fiddler crabs are a common sight. You can either stroll about nonchalantly or rent bicycles to explore the town; swerving past unsuspecting local folks. Take the chance to exchange a few words with the locals; learning how the village came to be and observing them going about their daily chores.
Catch the return ferry to Port Klang and get on the coach to your next destination, the Sultan Salahuddin Mosque. Along the way, catch a glimpse of the Istana Alam Shah (Palace of the Sultan of Selangor), an imposing structure that is now the official palace of the Sultan of Selangor. The Sultan Salahuddin Mosque is prominently known as the Blue Mosque due to its huge silver and blue dome. Second largest in the whole of Southeast Asia, it has four impressive minarets; combining modernistic and Malay architecture with the capacity to accommodate 24,000 worshippers at an instance.
This tour will not be complete without visiting the Thean Hou Temple, the epitome of Chinese cultural influence in Southeast Asia. Bold and striking in its facade, this six-tiered Buddhist place of worship—one of the largest and oldest in Southeast Asia—is also known as the Temple of the Goddess of Heaven. Take the opportunity to appreciate the panoramic views of the city from above, admire praise-worthy embellishments, stroll along the medicinal herb garden and stand under the shade of the sacred Bodhi tree.
