It is a thriving habitat for oysters and beautiful pearls, home to beautiful pagodas and temples and also full of historical and cultural monuments which are reflective of its darker and lesser known history. In the southern part of the island, you will find that Phu Quoc has so much more to offer when it comes to its historical, cultural and economic roots. Learn more about the famous pearl industry of the island, the lesser known history of prisoners and tortures on the island as you make your way around the rustic road of this jewel island.
Your first destination is the Pearl Farm. As one of Phu Quoc’s most famous and sought after export, pearl farming has become one of the industry staples of the island. The pristine and beautiful water of the island offers the perfect breeding ground for pearls to flourish and grow. During your visit, you will also have the chance to learn more on the process of cultivating oysters and how to properly raise and take care of it such that it increases the quality of the produced pearls. You will be surprised to know just how oysters are able to absorb salt and minerals from the water and convert them into the beautiful ball of jewellery called pearl. However, that is not all. You will also get to learn more about the darker side of history as you make your way to Coconut Prison (also known as Phu Quoc Prison). It was here that the French colonial rulers would dump prisoners and defectors back in the 1940s. Prisoners were also exposed to poor living conditions, small space and torturous treatment by their cellmaster, all cultivating in an inhumane display of cruelty. Exhibits are presented in the prison to help paint a clearer picture of the kind of treatment the prisoners are subjected to as well so you are in for an emotional and eye-opening ride.
Afterwards, you will go for lunch at a local restaurant before heading over to the Fish Sauce Factory as part of your culinary tour. From there, you will head to Bai Sao Beach and enjoy the seaside view before making your way to Ho Quoc Pagoda which is strategically and beautifully located by the mountain. From there on, you will conclude your tour and head back to your hotel to finish the journey.
