Wander around the city of Georgetown and take in the sights of colonial structures echoing a rich past, cultural heritage and religious sites.
Georgetown, the capital of Penang, is a historical city with no shortage of colonial and cultural heritage. Named after King George III of England, there are numerous sites and prominent structures that are relics of a bygone epoch; a testimony to colonial influences which are now under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour begins with the first stop at Fort Cornwallis, a star-shaped bastion that is the largest in Malaysia and once belonged to the East India Company. Constructed in 1786, it served as an administrative centre as well as a bulwark against the French forces and pirates.
A 10-minute walk would bring you to the Penang State Museum & Art Gallery. Constructed in 1821, it showcases Baba Nyonya antiques, historical events, ornamental garments and old paintings that clearly display Penang’s extensive culture and heritage. If the tour happens on a Friday, the visit will be replaced with a tour of the Chinese clan settlements at Chew Jetty instead as the museum is closed on a Friday. One of the many clan settlements at Weld Quay, the Chew clan is perhaps the largest and its kinship is evident here.
Ditch the modern coach in favour of the authentic and traditional trishaw ride to explore the heart of Georgetown. As you explore further, do not miss the chance to visit the Penang Khoo Kongsi, a lavishly decorated structure with stunning sculptures and intricate architecture that is the embodiment of clan solidarity. Built in 1851, it is the most magnificent clan temple in the country; a symbol of dominance and prosperity of the Khoo family.
Since religion is a major influence throughout the historical city, visit the Wat Chayamangkalaram, a Thai Buddhist temple, to gain more cultural insights and to witness one of the world’s largest reclining Buddha (33 metres). Majestic and awe-inspiring, this gold-plated reclining Buddha is fascinating to behold; do not be surprised at the crowd with a mix of foreign and local tourists flocking to take a picture or to pay homage.
