Take on the historical town of Ipoh and go on a culinary adventure that will have you sampling dishes to pastries and coffee!
Step foot onto the historical grounds of the town of Ipoh where foodies also frequent for the abundance of food that can be found there. With its architecture of British influence still standing proud and its history of being a famous tin mining town, Ipoh is a place that a visit should definitely be made to on your itinerary. In Ipoh, you will find a mixture of the old and new, so prepare to be transported back and forth in time as you travel around the quaint little town.
Ipoh presents to visitors an opportunity to go on a culinary adventure where foodies can sate their hunger and quench their thirst in the mass of traditional stalls and kopitiams (coffee shops) that take up residence in shophouses. Ipoh Kai Si Hor Fun is a delicious and popular dish which is made with soft translucent flat rice noodles, chicken slices and prawns in a lightly savoury chicken broth. Though simple-looking, this dish will make you feel comfortably warm from head to toe.
Try the famed kaya puffs that melt in your mouth especially if they’re still warm, their soft pastry giving way to the sweet kaya filling. There is also the popular Nasi Vanggey which gets its origins from the shop owner in Ipoh calling out “vanggey, vanggey, vanggey” to customers, a word in Tamil which means “come in”. This call and the delicious rice dish of chicken and beef cooked in red sauce and soy sauce with coconut sambal (spicy paste) have popularized the food, with many locals even flocking to the stall for a taste.
Take a break from eating and walk around the town to check out the historical buildings which present wonderful photo opportunities for tourist with their arches and intricate frames, designed in the past during the British colonial era. The juxtaposition of very Asian shops selling groceries or hardware and the British-looking buildings is a sight to marvel at. When you’re done photographing the town, head to a traditional kopitiam and settle down for a hot brewed cup of white coffee, a drink that the old town of Ipoh is famous for.
