Find out more about the rich history and culture of Nha Trung as you make your way around the popular Nha Trung City area.
The city of Nha Trang is not just your normal tourist destination. The city used to be called Kauthara under the rule of the Kingdom of Champa and even today, the city still retains many of its historical sites around the area. From the grand villas of Bao Dai, Long Son Pagoda to Cham Ponagar Temple, the city is full of many historical and cultural sites for you to explore. The Cham tribe is one of the major ethnic groups found in Nha Trang and it is no surprise that the name “Nha Trang” is actually a dialectic pronunciation of the original word “Ya Trang” a.k.a. “Reed River”. When it comes to a rich culture and beautiful coastal view, Nha Trang has them all.
Located merely 5 km away from the city centre, Bao Dai Villas is one of the few remaining examples of French colonial architecture in Vietnam. These grand villas were built in 1923 as a holiday resort for the last Vietnamese King Bao Dai and Queen Nam Phuong and are located on a mountain overlooking the East Sea. Its elevated position and strategic location give it a full view of the coastal islands and allows the area to enjoy a refreshing breeze all year round. When you are here, be sure to tone down the photo-taking and take the time to simply enjoy the refreshing wind blowing by your side. Next, you will stop by Long Son Pagoda. Founded in the 19th century, the pagoda stands as a beautiful example of classic Buddhist architecture with a towering Buddha statue sitting on top. The elevated standing of the pagoda also allows for beautiful panorama to greet any visitors who come and is the perfect spot for you to gaze through the far horizon.
Your final destination will take you around the ancient Cham architecture at Cham Ponagar Temple Complex. Locally referred to as Thap Ba, this set of ancient Cham temples is strategically located on a hill just outside the city. It can also be reached by crossing the Cai River and by heading eastwards along the riverside. Here, you will get the chance to learn about the fascinating ancient civilization of the Hindu Cham people and take various pictures of the surrounding temple ground.
