Follow in the footsteps of Borneo’s headhunters as you trek through the Mulu National Park and feel close to nature while you hike the headhunter’s trail!
Day 1 – Limbang
Arrive at Limbang to spend a night in a 3-star hotel before you embark on your journey on the headhunter’s trail the next morning. Limbang is a town located in the northern region of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. The area is not popular amongst tourist and its tourism is underdeveloped but it still remains popular amongst domestic tourists. In order to get to Limbang you can catch a flight from Kota Kinabalu and Miri.
Day 2 – Kuala Terikan/ Mentawai Ranger Station/ Headhunter’s Trail
Wake up bright and early for breakfast before heading off to longhouse on 4WDs. You’ll enjoy an hour and a half, fun ride on these vehicles before arriving at your destination. From there you’ll travel by boat along the Terikan River until you reach Kuala Terikan. If you’re planning to go on this tour during the months of July until September, the river levels will be low so you may have to push the boat upwards against the rapids. So prepare for some strenuous activity!
Settle down for a nice picnic lunch at Mentawai Ranger Station which rests on the border of the Mulu National Park before you begin your hike to Camp 5. Prepare yourself for a day of exercise, as the hike up to your second accommodation will take 4 hours. The trek up to Camp 5 is called the Headhunter’s trail and follows the footsteps of the Kayan headhunting parties’ journey to launch their attacks. Despite the tiring 12 km trek, you’ll be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest while you walk through the trails. You’ll truly feel one with nature as you sleep under the stars at Camp 5 with only a mat and blanket to serve as your bed. Once you reach the campsite you’ll get to eat a well-deserved, warm dinner before retiring for the night.
Day 3 – Kuala Litut/ Wind Cave/ Clearwater Cave/ Mulu National Park/ Deer Cave/ Lang’s Cave/ Park Café
At 6:00 am, you have an hour to eat your breakfast and prepare to leave as the 2.5-hour trek to Kuala Litut must commence. The trail spans a distance of 9 kilometres, surrounded by lush rainforest growth. The ambience of the forest makes the tiring trek enchanting enough to keep you going. Once you reach Kuala Litut, you can give your feet a rest as a boat takes you to visit Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Travel along the Melinau River towards Clearwater Cave and stop by Wind Cave first.
Walk along the wooden walkway leading from the riverbank to the entrance of Wind Cave and once you’re inside you will see impressive stalactites, stalagmites and rock corals covering its cavernous walls and ceiling. At Clearwater Cave, you will see an underground river and a crystal clear pool filled with water that flows from the cave. Visitors are welcome to take a dip in its cool water. Clearwater Cave is the longest cave in Asia with its insides measuring up to 222 kilometres in length.
You can enjoy a picnic lunch at the shelters, then leave at 1:00 pm by boat to Mulu National Park. There you will check-in to your rainforest lodge and prepare for your trek to Deer Cave and Lang’s Cave. The trek to Deer Cave is framed by rainforest, jungle streams and an ancient Penan burial cave. Deer Cave has the largest cave passage in the world. Bats, swiftlets and cave-dwelling snakes can be found in both Deer Cave and Lang’s Cave.
