Explore Mulu Caves; with its unique limestone formations and the beautiful wonders of the Gunung Api peak!
Day 1 – Arrival at Mulu, Lang’s / Deer Caves / Bat Exodus
To kickstart your adventure, you will be picked up from Mulu Airport before embarking towards Mulu National Park. After registration, there will be a 3km trek through the lavish forest and gushing rivers, passing by beautiful limestones projecting and even swamps. Along with this expedition, we will even come to see a Penan burial cave before we reach the entrance of the world’s largest cave passage. This majestic cave is also known as the Deer Cave, or Gua Rusa as it was once a sanctuary for deer, and hence the local Berawan and Penan people bestowed the name to the cave. Bringing life to the cave are birds gliding through the darkness and the swarms of Wrinkle Lipped bats waiting to feast on the generous population of insects. A mere 100 metres away, we will be able to experience the Lang’s Cave, even though smaller than the other show caves, has delightfully decorated walls of breathtaking rock formations. Not leaving out the stunning stalagmites and stalactites as well. If the weather is kind, we will be able to witness the marvellous bat exodus, a black cloud of millions of bats arising from the cave in search of food. Following that, we will head back to our accommodation to rest for the day.
Day 2 – Batu Bungan ‘Penan Settlement’ / Wind & Clearwater Caves / Departure
After filling up with breakfast and a quick checkout, we will kick start the day at 8.30am, leaving for Batu Bungan - Penan Settlement, via a long-tailed boat. This 15-minute journey will allow you to experience going upriver before observing the tribe lifestyle. We will then proceed to our next attraction, the Wind Cave, named for the cool breeze whisking through. As part of the Clearwater cave system, including the King’s Chamber, it is filled with mesmerising forests of stalagmites and stalactites formations. Journeying on, we will finally come to our next destination, the vast Clearwater Cave. Get your cameras ready as this cave boasts a captivating underground river. The plank walks, floating bridges, as well as paths, make this a light and pleasurable experience.
Moving on from the cave tour, we will have to climb down some steps to the picnic area set with an alluring clearwater pool, that flows out of the cave. This is the perfect swimming spot for a relaxing dip.
There, we will renew our strength with lunch while appreciating the sight of graceful butterflies fluttering near the edge of the riverbank. If you are lucky, there may even be an opportunity to spot the Rajah Brooke Butterfly—easily distinguished by its large brightly-coloured green wings—a rare birdwing butterfly that is indigenous to this region. After this, we will head to Camp 5 and turn in for the day.
Day 3 – Gunung Api / Pinnacles
After a hearty breakfast, it is time to ascend to Gunung Api, a limestone mountain famous for accommodating arresting limestone karst formations. Get some good trekking shoes on as it is around a 3-6 hour hike up to the famous peak. Caution should be exercised on the climb up as we will be passing through some lowland dipterocarp forest as well as a moss forest, where everything is mostly enveloped by green moss and may be slippery. The steep climb up is incredibly worthwhile as it rewards with an exceptionally breathtaking view of pinnacle formations, which can even be as high as 40 metres, rocks and vegetation. After snapping some beautiful photographs of the pinnacle and a good short rest, we will begin our descend back down to Camp 5 where lunch and dinner are provided. We will then call it a day and spend another night at Camp 5.
Day 4 – Headhunter’s Trail / Longhouse
After starting off the day with a quick breakfast and checkout, we will proceed with the day’s adventure with the Headhunter’s Trail. This easygoing trail was frequented by the Kayan headhunting parties who rowed up the Melinau River up to Melinau Gorge, where they dragged their canoes overland to raid the people of the Limbang region. We will first embark on a 4-5 hour trek through the lush forest to Kuala Terikan and then journey by boat to the Rumah Bala Lesong longhouse. The trek offers an exceptional introduction to the rainforest and rivers of Mulu as well as the perks of an attractive longhouse visit. Upon arrival, dinner will be served here at the longhouse where you will be able to enjoy a meal in a traditional communal Iban accommodation. We will then end the day’s adventure and experience a night’s stay in the longhouse.
Day 5 – Departure from Limbang
Breakfast will be served in the morning and the journey continues by longboat downriver to Nanga Medamit, where we will be heading to the town of Limbang by road. You will be transferred to the Mulu airport for your flight home.
