Explore some of Sarawak’s most gorgeous speleological wonders known as the four Mulu Caves that are inhabited by bats and other elusive cave-dwellers.
Day 1 – Arrival at Mulu, Lang’s / Deer Caves / Bat Exodus
To kickstart your adventure, you will be picked up from Mulu Airport before embarking towards Mulu National Park. After registration, there will be a 3km trek inland, passing by limestone outcrop, alluvial flats, and swamps. As we crisscross through the dense rainforest, take in the sights of clear jungle streams and even a Penan burial cave en route to the enormous cave. One of the largest cave passage in the world, the cave was once a safe haven for deers—thus named Gua Rusa, or Deer Cave, by the local Penan and Berawan people. Keep a look out for the cave inhabitants; swarms of bats, cave-dwelling snakes and a large population of insects, giving life to the inky and otherwise desolate environment. Located just a short distance away, Lang’s Cave is perhaps the smallest of all the show caves but boasts beautiful rock formations with well-lit stalagmites and stalactites. If the weather permits, you will be treated to a spectacular phenomenon—the exodus of more than a million bats exiting the caves to feed on insects. After that, we will call it a day and retire to the luxurious Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa for the night.
Day 2 – Batu Bungan ‘Penan Settlement’ / Wind & Clearwater Caves / Departure
After a hearty breakfast, we will push off at 8:30 am for Batu Bungan—a Penan settlement—via a long-tailed boat. The settlement is just a pitstop before our main attraction, the Wind Cave. The journey takes roughly 15 minutes; take this opportunity to experience going up the river, surrounded by lush verdure on both sides. Follow the plank walk and you would arrive at the entrance to Wind Cave, so named because of the tangible cool breeze at narrow sections. As part of the Clearwater cave system, it is rife with incredible stalactites, helictites and stalagmites formations illuminated in the “King’s Chambers”. Continuing on, we will eventually arrive at the Clearwater Cave, adorned with an enchanting underground river—a perfect spot for shutterbugs and nature photographers.
After that, we will climb down some steps to the picnic area set with a captivating clearwater pool, perfect for a relaxing dip. There, we will replenish our strength with lunch while enjoying the sight of dazzling butterflies fluttering near the edge of the riverbank. If we are lucky, we might even spot the Rajah Brooke Butterfly—discernible by its large brightly-coloured green wings—a rare birdwing butterfly that is indigenous to this region. Take in the rainforest scenery and enjoy the relaxing ambience before we conclude the tour and return to the airport for your air transfer back to Miri.
