Visit Nabalu Market for some good deals off souvenirs and food and climb up to Mount Kinabalu’s Low’s Peak to view the gorgeous sunrise from above!
Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu / Nabalu Market / Poring Hotsprings Resort
The journey to Kinabalu Park will be a scenic 2-hour one which shows off Kota Kinabalu’s natural beauty. Roll down the windows slightly and take in the fresh air of the countryside and admire the views of pleasant local villages and flat, uniform paddy fields. Wave hello to friendly locals who are out and about carrying on their daily routines as you pass them by! En route to Kinabalu Park, pay a visit to Nabalu Market.
Located in the small town of Nabalu, Nabalu Market is a popular tourist destination as it is conveniently close and along the way to Kinabalu Park. Stroll along and browse through the many stalls and shops selling unique little trinkets and handicrafts made by the locals. Don’t hesitate to purchase a few as souvenirs; they’ll be something to remember this trip by and will also put a smile on the locals’ faces! There is also food available at Nabalu Market, along with a 15-metre tall watchtower that enables you to have a beautiful unobstructed view of Mount Kinabalu’s majestic peak.
Upon your arrival at the hot springs, you can sit back and relax once you’ve checked in. There are two activities that you can choose from to do at the accommodation. For those of you who feel like your muscles need to release tension from the drive up to Poring Hot Springs, you can bask in the hot sulphuric spring chock-full of minerals that is said to have healing properties. If your muscles feel just fine, you can opt to stretch them out on a walk along the canopy walkway that gives you gorgeous views of Menggaris tree canopies and maybe even a glimpse of the Rafflesia. Before settling in for the night, treat yourself to a good dinner.
Day 2 – Park HQ / Timp. Gate / Ascend Mount Kinabalu / Laban Rata
Awaken bright and early to chow down on a good, filling breakfast to stock up on your energy levels before departing to the Park Headquarters at 7:00 am. At the Park HQ, you will register for your climb, apply for your ID tag and meet your experienced mountain guide who will be the one you have to trust for your safety up on the mountain. Once you receive your ID tag, you should keep it on you at all times as it is important as an identifier should anything happen along the trek. Commence your trek to Timpohon Gate to kick off your Mount Kinabalu climb!
Prepare yourself for a 4 to 5-hour climb to Kinabalu’s tall peak, so you should definitely ensure that you’re fit and in the best of health for this journey. While the trek up is exhausting, it is absolutely worth it for the view and sense of accomplishment you get once you’ve reached your destination alone. The temperature gets colder the higher you climb so pack warmly for the trek. On your way up, you can see the diverse growth of over 5000 different vascular plant species and tall trees, their thick canopies blanketing the ground beneath with emerald. Arrive at your destination and treat yourself to a well-deserved dinner before settling into bed.
Day 3 – Low's Peak / Descend Mount Kinabalu / Kota Kinabalu
Your day begins with you waking up when it’s still dark out for your supper before continuing on your trek to Low’s Peak. This is the real test of the past few days as this trek will push your body to its limit. Low’s Peak stands at 4,095 metres above sea level, making it a formidable opponent to conquer, and the altitude does not make the journey any easier. Nonetheless, the relief and pride that rushes through you once you reach the top is priceless.
The sunrise that you will witness if the day is clear will also make the entire trip worthwhile. Watch as the sun leisurely rises from above the clouds, colouring the sky various shades and hues of colour. When the sun has fully risen, head back down to Laban Rata where you can calm your hungry stomach with a delicious breakfast before going back to Timpohon Gate. Once there, you will be transported to the Park HQ where you will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement for completing the climb. Celebrate your success with a hearty buffet lunch at Balsam Restaurant before being brought back to Kota Kinabalu.
