Explore the peaceful mountainous views of Ma Tra village and the mysterious beauty of Ta Phin monastery.
Leave the usual busy daily life behind as you take a walk to uncover Sapa’s natural settings and their ethnic group’s cultural life. As you stroll along on the dirt trail, you will come across bright colourful gardens and abundant green pine forests. After a challenging trek uphill, you’ll arrive at Ma Tra, one of the quietest villages in Sapa, and a must visit for those who want to explore Sapa’s preserved customs and cultures. Extending 12 kilometres on the low hills, Ma Tra offers a stunning panorama view of the mountainous Sapa. As stunning as the view is, the village is peaceful and not as touristy as other locations. As with many other villages in Sapa, Ma Tra is famous for its weaving, forging, silver carving and brocade products. You might stumble upon blue hands from the older woman in the village, as it is a tradition for Hmong women to dye their linen indigo.
Before you continue on your walk through the seemingly unending wide rice terrace, stop at a village school in Ma Tra. Meet the lovely small children at school and visit the simple classrooms of the primary school. Come across something seemingly trivial, yet provides you more insight into the life of the locals. Then, your last stop will be a mysterious old monastery at Ta Phin village. Ta Phin Abbey holds a mysterious beauty. The construction of the monastery started in 1942, yet only a portion of the building was finished. It was once home to 12 religious sisters of Catholic. Food plants such as black oats, peaches or grapes are believed to be contributed by the nuns, as they actively research what plants and fruits are most suitable for the soil and temperature of the area. However, when security situations were unstable, the nuns were forced to evacuate to Ha Noi, leaving the monastery. It now is abandoned, but looks like a building from a fairy tale book due to its thick vegetation and mystical beauty. The short visit at the abbey of Ta Phin will also complete your tour as a car will wait for you outside to take you back.
