Go on an adventure by bike travelling through the high hill trails to Ma Tra and Ta Phin village and explore the life of the Black Hmong and Red Dao
From Sapa, you will first start your bicycle ride toward Lao Cai. The easy road will not last long as you soon turn to the dirt trails at the outskirts and head straight to the off-road terrain of the countryside. But the journey itself will not take too long - half an hour later, you will reach the first stop of the trip at Ma Tra Village. Even better, the path you take will put your cycling skills to the test so you are sure to enjoy an adventure-filled morning as soon as you start cycling. Along the way, you will cycle downhill along the mountainous track, cross a bridge or two before crossing over a gentle stream. Once you complete your full journey, you will finally make a stop at Ma Tra Village to begin your journey into the centre of cultural immersion.
Ma Tra sits in a silent and peaceful valley located about 5 kilometers away from Sapa. Stretching as wide as 12 kilometers and home to about 50 Black Hmong (and Red Dao) families, the golden rice fields, verdant cornfields and beautiful stilted houses add to the breathtaking beauty of the village itself. Be sure to take this chance to strike a conversation with the villagers as they work on their fields and brocades. You will also have the chance to visit the village’s primary school, meet up with local children and find out more on how classes are usually conducted on a daily basis. Then, lunchtime will quickly come and you can choose to walk around and enjoy the view while you are at it or simply sit down inside the local house and enjoy your warm meal.
Then, make your way to yet another home of the Black Hmong and Red Dao - Ta Phin Village. Experience the daily lives of local tribal families as you see them tending their fields, sewing their brocades and carving beautiful jewellery throughout your visit. Occasionally, you might come across Hmong woman dyeing pieces of clothes in a deep indigo color. You may even see them meticulously sewing patterns on their clothes. Furthermore, the Red Dao tribe is famous for their herbal bath which is believed to have a positive effect on your health. Feel free to give the bath a try or simply marvel at the harmonious living of the different tribe all in a single village. With this done, you will then conclude your tour and head back to Sapa.
