Take the opportunity to mingle with the Orang Utan at a rehabilitation centre and stay at a longhouse to observe native tribal culture and lifestyle.
Day 1 - Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Serian Town
Start the day fresh and early and depart for the Semenggoh Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre; home to the Orang Utan—great apes that are literally known as the “person of the forest”—and other species of wildlife saved from captivity. The centre aims to nurture and rehabilitate them into their natural surroundings and to eventually return them to their natural habitat. You may or may not get to witness many Orang Utans at the feeding platform. However, do not be disheartened as this only means that they are capable of foraging on their own without human assistance—a positive thing if they are to return to their natural habitat.
Stop by Serian town to experience the native market and pepper garden. An implementation of the ‘Healthy City/Town’ concept has transformed the town into a tourist attraction. Aside from that, we can also make a pit stop to see bamboo orchids and the pitcher plants—said to have medicinal properties. Appease your growling stomach with lunch at Lachau Village, where you can savour delicious rice noodles and walk around to purchase local handicrafts that are ablaze with colours.
Next, head towards your overnight accommodation for a unique experience with the Iban natives. On arrival, embark on a boat to get to the longhouse where you will spend your time touring the area. Enjoy a meal specially prepared by your Iban hosts that comprise of jungle ferns, palm hearts, cucumber leaves and bamboo shoots with rice; an odd combination but extremely appetising. Then, observe traditional dances and join the revelry in the longhouse; taste the local rice wine—tuak—before hitting the hay.
Day 2 – Lemanak
Wake up bright and early; enjoy a simple breakfast at the longhouse before heading out to observe the Ibans going about their activities—cockfighting, hunting using a blowpipe and foraging. Head out for a short nature tour to learn about local flora and medicinal herbs as well as learn how animal traps are set. We will pass by ancient burial grounds en route to the river bank where we will brave the rapids and bends of the Lemanak River on a longboat. As we head upstream, we will make a few stops to collect jungle produces before continuing to the guesthouse for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 – Lemanak / Kuching
As we brush off the last vestiges of sleep, enjoy a light breakfast before travelling down river to catch the coach back to Kuching city, leaving behind fond memories. We will stop for lunch en route at Ranchan Waterfall before visiting a pottery factory along the way to observe how pots are made and its various processes. Finally, transfer back to your hotel in Kuching for some much needed R&R to conclude the tour.
