Head to Rinca Island to see the Komodo dragon unique to Indonesian islands and go snorkelling at Bidadari Island.
Day 1 – Denpasar / Labuan Bajo / Rinca Island
Your adventure begins the moment your airplane touches down on the runway at Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo to the west of Flores. From the airport, you will be transferred to the pier of Labuan Bajo, headed for Rinca Island. The island of Komodo Dragons, Rinca Island is about 2 to 3 hours by boat. Upon arrival on land, you will go on a trek through the dry forests on an exploration of the island. Keep an eye out for the Komodo dragons who own this land as they prowl around looking for prey.
Komodo dragons are the largest living species of lizard and can grow up to lengths of 3 metres, making them rather formidable creatures to come face to face with. In any case, they are predators to the bone and should not be disturbed or provoked or even approached as they can run faster than a human for a distance and they also have a venomous bite. Nonetheless, these majestic creatures will have your attention even from a distance, so there is no real need to approach them without an expert guide with you. These dragons are not the only animals you will see on your exploratory trek.
Other wild animals like deer, water buffalo, long-tailed macaques, pigs and numerous species of birds also make their home on Rinca Island. In the trees you may spot birds, macaques or even some young Komodo dragons (yes, they can climb)! A local ranger will guide you along the trek, so don’t worry about getting lost. In the late afternoon, you will sail directly to Kalong Island to witness hundreds of flying foxes emerging from mangrove trees. The sunset during the boat trip is a lovely touch to the end of the day. After your dinner on the boat, you can settle in for bed onboard.
Day 2 – Kalong Island / Bidadari / Labuan Bajo / Denpasar
After breakfast on the boat, you will take a trip to Bidadari (Angel Island) for a few rounds of snorkelling. The clear waters make for a wonderful snorkelling experience and the white sandy beach is great for relaxing or sunbathing. After you’ve had your fill of sun, sand and sea, return to Labuan Bajo, and this is where this adventure ends.
