Visit Komodo dragons at Rinca Island and Komodo Island, snorkel or relax at Pink Beach, view Manta Rays at Manta Point and see the cave with walls of mirror, Batu Cermin Cave!
Day 1 – Denpasar / Labuan Bajo / Rinca Island / Kalong Island
Disembark from your flight to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, located to the west of Flores. Here, you’ll meet the tour representative who will introduce Flores to you and take you to a boat awaiting your arrival at the pier of Labuan Bajo. The boat is your mode of transport to Rinca Island, which is 2 and a half-hour’s journey away. When you reach the island, an experienced guide will be waiting for you to take you on a trek to explore the dry forests of the island which are home to many types of wildlife.
One notable animal that resides here is the Komodo dragon, a formidable predator that is the largest living species of lizard in the world. It can grow up to lengths of 3 metres and is native to only several Indonesian islands. These creatures are heavy and strong and possess a dangerous tail whip and a venomous bite. Avoid disturbing or provoking them as they can and will chase you if they get irritated. Only ever approach them at a distance when an experienced guide who knows how to handle the situation is with you.
There are other wild animals on Rinca Island that create the ecosystem you will explore. These animals are deer, water buffalo, long-tailed macaques, pigs and numerous species of birds. While trekking, spare a glance towards the tree branches as you may spot some birds, resting macaques and maybe even some young Komodo dragons in them! In the late afternoon, go on an open-deck boat trip to Kalong island where hundreds of flying foxes emerge from the forests as sunset falls. On the boat, you can have your dinner and settle in for bed.
Day 2 – Komodo Island / Pink Beach / Manta Point / Labuan Bajo
You will have your breakfast in your boat and then sail directly to Loh Liang, the Ranger station in Komodo Island. The journey will take 2 and a half hours by boat and will pass through many smaller islands. Upon arrival, register for a basic trekking tour that takes you to see the Komodo dragons and other wild animals. A guide will lead you through the trek and keep you safe. After the trek, return to the boat and be brought to Pink Beach.
Pink Beach is one of seven pink beaches in the world and is one of the major nature attractions at Komodo Island. Microscopic animals called Foraminifera produce red pigment on coral reefs and tiny fragments of that coral washing up to shore and mixing with the white sand makes up the soft pink colour of the shore. At Pink Beach, you can snorkel and swim in the crystalline waters or just relax on the lovely shore. Tropical fish and colourful reef can be found when you venture underwater.
Later, sail towards Manta Point where huge Manta rays can be seen even from the boat. If the weather is good, you can go snorkelling amongst these large friendly creatures. Lunch will be provided on the boat. In the late afternoon, head back to Labuan Bajo harbour to be transferred back to your hotel for dinner and rest.
Day 3 – Labuan Bajo / Denpasar
Go on a short sightseeing excursion of the city after your breakfast. Visit Batu Cermin (Mirror Stone) Cave, a limestone cave with a big hole through which rays of sunlight will shine in and reflect off the insides of the walls. The walls have slick and smooth surfaces which act like mirrors and enable them to reflect the light, creating an interesting and wonderful effect. There are also stalactites and stalagmites to be found inside the cave as well as tunnels. Before you depart to Denpasar, take a look at a local market.
