Pay the Komodo dragons at Rinca and Komodo Islands a visit, take a dip at the unique Pink Beach, snorkel with Manta rays at Manta Point and check out the mirror-like walls of Batu Cermin Cave!
Day 1 – Denpasar / Labuan Bajo / Rinca Island / Kalong Island
Arrive safely at Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, located in the west of Flores. Once there, you will meet up with your tour representative who will serve as your tour guide as well. From the airport, you will be driven to Labuan Bajo pier where a boat will take you from the pier to Rinca Island. The trip should take about 2 and a half hours. Upon your arrival at the island, you will be met by a local ranger tasked with leading your trek through the typical dry forests of the island.
In these forests, you will find a variety of wildlife, from deer, water buffalo, long-tailed macaques and pigs to numerous species of colourful and tropical birds, including the Komodo dragon, of course. The Komodo dragon is native to only a few islands in Indonesia, Rinca Island being one of them. The Komodo dragon is the largest living species of lizard in the world and has an extremely strong tail that whips and a venomous bite.
While on your trek, spare a glance every so often towards the overhead branches lest you see a tropical bird or lazing macaque or even a young Komodo dragon on the hunt! As soon as afternoon falls, set sail on an air-conditioned cabin boat that will guarantee you a comfortable ride to Kalong Island. At Kalong Island, observe hundreds of flying foxes leaving the mangrove forests at sunset. Have your dinner to the spectacular sight, then settle in for bed onboard.
Day 2 – Komodo Island / Pink Beach / Manta Point / Labuan Bajo
Have your breakfast on the boat and then set sail directly to Loh Liang where Komodo Island’s Ranger station is located. You will sail for about 2 and a half hours, passing through several smaller islands along the way. Upon your arrival, register for a basic trekking tour that brings you to see even more Komodo dragons as well as other wildlife. When you’re done with your trek, return to the boat and head to Pink Beach.
Pink Beach at Komodo Island is one of seven pink beaches in the entire world. It is undeniably one of the major nature attractions at Komodo Island and when you see it in person you will realize just why. Its soft pastel pink shores complement the crystalline waters and azure skies perfectly. Microscopic animals that release red pigment onto coral whose tiny fragments wash up on shore to mix in with the white sand, creating the pink sand, is the reason for this phenomenon.
Some of the top activities to be done at Pink Beach is snorkelling, swimming or just relaxing on the beach. When you’re done here, get back on the boat and sail towards Manta Point where you can observe huge Manta rays gliding through the water. If the weather permits, you can go ahead and snorkel amongst these huge friendly creatures. Enjoy your lunch onboard, then return to Labuan Bajo harbour by late afternoon. From there, you will be transferred to your hotel for a dinner and rest.
Day 3 – Labuan Bajo / Denpasar
Have your breakfast at your hotel then embark on an exploration of the city’s top sightseeing spots. Batu Cermin (Mirror Stone) Cave is the first stop for the day. It is a cave with a large hole in it through which light will shine and bounce off the smooth walls. The smooth inner walls of the cave act like mirrors and reflect the light, hence the given name of the cave. It is an interesting effect and definitely a visit to which you mustn’t miss out on.
Your second and final stop in Flores is at a local market where you can check out local produce and handicrafts. Explore the local market then leave to the airport for your return flight to Denpasar.
