Explore the oasis of Koh Kret by cycling and learn about the culture of Mon people.
Koh Kret is an island located at the north of Bangkok and is an island village in the middle of Chao Phraya River. The island is not a natural island but is formed due to the construction of canals. The island is a car-free oasis that is very similar to Bangkok’s Green Lung, Bang Krachao. This has made the island to become one of the more popular tourist spots to escape from the busy cities and enjoy in a peaceful environment. The island is dominated by the Mon population since its beginning. The Mon of Koh Kret is famous for their craftsmanship and pottery skills where they still make all kinds of terracotta and earthenware products. The main village on the island is a thriving marketplace where you can see the process of making potteries and buy pots, mortars, and flowerpots.
At the beginning of the tour, you will be picked up from your hotel in Bangkok and then transferred to the island. We will start our tour by riding along a canal and through rice paddy fields. We will also be riding above the canals at some parts of the area because walkways are built above the canals. We continue to cycle and head off along the banks of Chao Phraya River where we are able to pass by local villagers that are going on with their daily lives. Once away from the river, we ride into the rural areas of the island and will pass through paddy fields and fruit orchards. Enjoy the scenery along the way before we complete the first part of our cycling journey back to the banks of Bang Bua Thong. On the island of Koh Kret, we can see the Mon people’s pottery at the pottery village and visit the island’s Ancient Mon Pottery Centre.
Other than that, one of the biggest attraction on Koh Kret is the Wat Paramai Yikawat. The temple houses a Mon-style marbled statue and has a museum that exhibits religious objects and local pottery. Another of the temple’s most famous landmark is its 200-year-old leaning stupa which leans out towards the river. We will then finish our cycling by crossing back over the river to Wat Bang Jak. Wat Bang Jak houses 19 metres high Buddha statue that can be seen from far. After a short tour, we will enjoy a great Thai lunch accompanied by the view of the river before we head back to Bangkok.
