Get the most out of your budget travelling experience with this 5 days / 4 nights of wild nature exploration tour around the lush untamed primary forest of Malaysia.
Who says that travelling has to be expensive and luxurious? Beat the trend and go on your very own adventurous budget travel as you explore the many hidden and wondrous natural attractions in Malaysia. To name a few, you will be visiting the Kinabatangan River (Malaysia’s 2nd longest river), the Gomantong Caves (Lower Kinabatangan’s largest limestone outcrop) and Sepilok’s sunbear and orangutan sanctuary among many others. Along the way, be mesmerised by the beautiful view and the lushness of the green forest that makes the east coast a place worth visiting. Even better, a budget tour means that you do not have to spend too much in the first place too! So let’s challenge the idea of luxury in travelling and do what really counts - exploring the unknown!
Day 1
For guests who are flying in on the same day, we do recommend either the Air Asia AK6492 or the Malaysia Airlines MH2042 flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan airport. There are also alternative pickup points in Sandakan and Sepilok if you prefer. Upon picking you up at 8 A.M., you will head straight to the orangutan sanctuary where you get to see young orangutans playing around in the nursery. Lost yourself in time as you realise it is 10 A.M. and it is feeding time for these beautiful primates. With orangutans checked off the list, you will proceed to the sunbear sanctuary to see the world’s very own smallest bear. The cuteness of these furry bears will leave you wanting to cuddle them up.
Soon after, it will be lunchtime at a local restaurant. With a stuffed tummy, make your way to the Kinabatangan River at around 1 P.M. Upon arrival, check yourself in as you refresh with some drinks and an orientation session to the lodge. Then go on your first cruise along the bank of the river in search of wildlife and birds. Once the evening sets in, go back to your lodge for dinner. With a full tummy, you have the option to go for a walk around nocturnal animals or to simply retire for the day.
Day 2
You will board the boat first thing in the dawn for some pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and orangutans before coming back for some breakfast. Then, go for a trek along the river banks for another wildlife hunt before you sit down for lunch. Feel the calmness of the forest simply seeping into the serenity of the forest as you look out for wild animals peeking through and roaming freely around you. After lunch, you will join the cruise for even more wildlife exploring opportunities until evening sets in and dinner is served in a buffet. With buffet done, you will have another chance to walk the night and search for some nocturnal animals that you might come across.
Day 3
If the boat cruise is still too little for you, today is the last chance you have to get up early in the morning and jump into the boat as you search around for the rich wildlife of the surroundings. Alternatively, you can also opt for a more relaxing day with a well-deserved lie in before breakfast. At around 8:30 A.M., get yourself ready as you will be heading toward Danum Valley. Along the way, you will also stop to see the swiftlet nests in the Gomantong Caves. After checking in, you will have your delicious lunch followed by an orientation session to the field session. During this time, you will get to know more about the rich biodiversity of Danum Valley and how it comes to be known as it is today. We know the journey to the valley can be draining so you will have your time after the orientation to simply relax and take a quick siesta before continuing with the programme. Afterwards, you will go for your mid-afternoon walk where you might just catch a glimpse of the hornbills and orangutans roaming around the path surroundings. Return to your centre before sundown and enjoy your delicious dinner. Then, you can opt for your inclusive night walk or arrange for an optional 4x4 night drive with your friendly guide.
Day 4
Wake up early in the morning for some nature walk near Danum Valley Field Centre. Or, you can arrange for your own 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur for the amazing sunrise view atop the hill. Be sure to pre-arrange and tell your guide about your desire so that he/she may arrange it for you. Then return to the centre for some breakfast and go for a trail around the area if you wish before cooling yourself from the afternoon heat as you wait for lunch. Then wash off the day’s heat with a dip into the Ulu Segama river before going on yet another trek with your guide. Return just in time to see the beautiful sunset, have your dinner and go for an inclusive night walk with your guide or an optional 4x4 night drive.
Day 5
The morning always brings the surrounding alive so be sure to wake up early and catch some of the morning symphonies of the wildlife. After breakfast, you will have your time to finish packing and wait for the checkout time at 11 A.M. At 1:30 P.M., you will arrive at Lahad Datu for you to return home or to go for another travel.
