Day 2 – Moni / Kelimutu Lakes / Ende / Denpasar
You absolutely must experience the gorgeous sunrise over Kelimutu’s three coloured crater lakes, so wake up early and make your way over to them. Kelimutu volcano is located in central Flores, Indonesia, and is famous for its 3 colourful acid crater lakes. This phenomenon is created by the different salts and oxides suspended in the lakes, thus giving them the unique colours that can range from varying colours of blue to dark green and even intense red.
The entire location is scenic and definitely attracts a number of tourists. The three lakes are named Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Tai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched, or Enchanted Lake). The former is usually blue in colour, while the latter two are usually coloured green and red, respectively, though the colours can vary periodically. The seasons can affect the minerals in the lakes and interfere with the chemical processes that take place, leading to colour changes.
Pay a visit to the Wologai village and take a look at how the locals go about their daily lives and observe their architecture. Leave for Ende and be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Denpasar.
