Day 2 – Moni / Kelimutu Lakes / Riung
Catching the sunrise over Kelimutu’s tricoloured crater lakes is not an experience to be missed, so wake up bright and early for the drive to the location. You should arrive just in time to see the sun brightening up the sky. Located in central Flores, Indonesia, Kelimutu volcano is home to three colourful acid crater lakes that can range from dark green to red and blue. The different salts and oxides suspended in the water of the lakes are what give the lakes their colours.
The three lakes are called Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Tai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched, or Enchanted Lake), and they are usually coloured blue, green and red, respectively. Changes in the season may cause these colours to range as well. Your next stop will be at Saga and Wologai villages to observe locals going about their daily lives. Enjoy your lunch that will be served at a local restaurant in Ende.
Before lunch, stop by Penggajawa Blue Stone Beach where gorgeous grey, blue and turquoise stones of different shapes and sizes line the shore, replacing the regular golden sand that is usually the default shore of most beaches. Local women can often be seen scouring the beach for unique stones to collect and be sold to be used for garden decorating purposes. Once you’re done for the day, head back to your hotel for a dinner and rest.
Day 3 – Riung / Bajawa
After your breakfast, embark on a boat trip to explore the spectacular sea garden of seventeen islands. Lunch and a barbeque will be provided on the island to fill you up, then you will sail back to Riung to be driven up to Bajawa. A stop will be made by Soa, a natural hot spring pool that is great for bathing. Bajawa itself is a nice small town which also serves as the capital city of the Ngada Regency, which is home to the Ngada, Riung and Nagekeo tribes. Return to your accommodation for dinner and bed.
