Conquer the rapids of Jeram Besu in white water rafting, search for the Rafflesia and Lata Jarum waterfall as you trek through a tropical rainforest, enjoy zipping through the air on the Flying Fox and take on the challenge of abseiling!
Jeram Besu’s Class 1 to 3 rapids will take you for a ride on your whitewater rafting activity. Every rafter is guaranteed to have a fun time on its rapids, whether they’re a beginner or experienced kayaker. Jeram Besu is considered one of the best whitewater rafting spots that Malaysia has to offer, and a testament to this is how not just Malaysians from all over the country, but Singaporeans as well, will take the time and effort needed to travel to Jeram Besu just for its white water rafting.
Before you are allowed out on the rapids, you will first have to undergo the water confidence course that will bring you through scenarios to expect during the real thing. You will be taught how to float, sit and paddle in the raft, and how to resurface from a capsize. There is a “man overboard” activity that requires you to jump into a churning part of the rapids called the “Mother Rapids”. This is done to increase your confidence in the water and boost your adrenaline before you get to white water rafting. Once you’re done with the course, you’re ready to take on the rapids!
Not many people are aware of the fact that the Rafflesia is not only found in the Bornean states, and that it is also found in Peninsular Malaysia. In the heart of Lata Jarum forest is one place you’ll find this majestic red flower, with its five large, wart-covered petals and gaping chamber. Go on a trek in search of the world’s largest single flower that can grow up to 100 centimetres in diameter and weigh 10 kilograms per flower. It gives off a stench similar to rotting flesh in order to attract flies and other insects for pollination. This is one flower you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of seeing (and smelling)!
Besides being a home to Rafflesia, Lata Jarum forest also has a waterfall amongst its lush greenery. Although Lata Jarum waterfall is small and not as overwhelmingly impressive as the other popular Malaysian waterfalls, it still is a beauty. It can still invoke the peaceful atmosphere that the other waterfalls do, and visiting this waterfall is sure to put you in a pensive mood. Its large pool at its base beckons you in for a swim or a picnic by it. Rest your hardworking feet here, especially after the trek.
May the weather be in your favour on the day you do the Flying Fox! On this activity, there is not much work for you to do besides the climb up to the starting point. This Flying Fox runs down the incline of Jeram Besu river, and you will be strapped into a harness attached to a pulley suspended on a cable when you do this activity. In the past, zip-lining, which is what the Flying Fox originates from, was used as a mode of transport for goods and people in places that were hard to access on foot, especially like through rainforests on an incline. Now it is a popular vacation activity that everyone loves.
The only effort you have to put in while doing this activity is the climb up to a stage that is attached to a tall tree. From here, you will zip-line all the way down to the other end of the cable. Ensure that you are properly strapped into your Flying Fox gear, and prepare yourself for the drop. Once you kick off and gravity kicks in, it should be smooth sailing all the way down! Enjoy the short time in the air as you get a good view of the river and surrounding canopies from above.
Another activity that is sure to pump the adrenaline through your system is abseiling. This requires more effort and a higher level of fitness compared to the Flying Fox. The name abseiling stems from the German word abseilen which means “to rope down” and describes exactly what the activity entails. In a harness, safety rope and some thick gloves, among some other necessary equipment, you will abseil down 3 storeys’ worth of a steep, vertical wall. Before you attempt it, you will, of course, be briefed on the technique and safety measures, and will be given a live demonstration.
