Explore Bangkok’s famous and colourful Klong Lad Pli and Damnoen Saduak floating markets by bike along the canals all around the city.
Mae Klong River stretches a far length from the city of Bangkok all the way to the Gulf of Thailand into a sprawling delta. This low-lying land is extremely fertile and rich with natural resources. Over the hundred years, generations of Thai people have constructed an extensive network of canals to aid irrigations and navigations. The life of locals has remained traditional and unstained by the modern technologies. The lives revolve around the colourful floating markets where the fruits from surrounding orchards are traded.
Our journey begins from your pick-up at Bangkok and a drive towards the south. We will start our cycling tour at Klong Lad Pli Floating Market. The market is located not far away from the city and is not as touristy or crowded like the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Amphawa Floating Market. Due to this, it gives off an authentic and local vibe of Thailand floating market. There are many local foods and fruits sold in the market. Walking through the Klong Lad Pli Floating Market gives us a chance to see wooden houses perched from the edge of the canal including one that was once an opium den. After that, we will visit the famous Damnoen Saduak Floating Market which is the biggest in Thailand. It is also the most colourful one in Thailand as all sorts of goods and products can be found here to purchase. The market is filled with both locals and tourists and is very busy. You will get to see locals sell their wares straight from the orchard or farm on their boats on the canals.
After a visit to two floating markets, we go on a long tail boat and cruise through a maze of canals passing by plantations and orchards. The boat ride gives us a glimpse of former Thailand with canal as its focal point. At the end of the long tail boat ride, we hop on to our bikes and cycle to Wat Bang Khae Noi. The temple’s ordination hall was once located on a bamboo raft tied to a sacred Bodhi tree on the riverbank. It is also famous for its teakwood carving that portrays the life of Lord Buddha. Next, we will continue our cycling journey into fruit orchards and coconut plantations along the back roads. We will reach a unique temple that is surrounded by a huge banyan tree. After a short visit on the temple, we will have our lunch at a riverside restaurant before we continue our cycling tour along some great trails. After some refreshments, we will explore a temple complex and also a local market before we start our journey back to Bangkok.
