Go on your very own adventure around Loagan Bunut National Park and its surrounding lake as you pick up new fishing technique and trek your way around the dense primary forest.
Loagan Bunut is actually not just the name of the park itself. Originally, the name comes from the local Berawan’s naming for the natural lake. Fed by the local river, the lake spans a stunning 650 hectares in size and acts as Sarawak’s largest lake. The main attraction of the lake, however, is not the name nor the sheer size of it - but rather the fact that this lake actually disappears during drought season. That’s right! Despite the size of the lake, it can actually dry up during drought season and leave behind a huge dry hole in its wake. Of course, comes rainy season, the lake will fill itself back with the fresh and cool water but before that season comes, you will get to see a sight unlike any other. This occurrence is especially prominent from the month of February to September.
Of course, the lake ecosystem is not the only attracting factor of the place. You can catch a glimpse of the barking deer, bearded pig, Langur monkey and the famous tiny mouse deer along the way. If you are visiting during the rainy season, you will be able to go for a boat ride with the local fishermen to explore more of the lake. Occasionally, you may even find monkeys peeking through the foliage or barking deer drinking by the lake. Alternatively, you can also take part in some fishing and learn some new techniques from the local fishermen. With the rising and falling water level of the lake, the fishermen have devised a unique style called the “Selambau” where you can actually scoop up the fish alongside the rising and falling of the water. If you are interested, approach the local fishermen for some one-on-one lesson on this unique fishing technique.
Even during the dry season, you are still welcomed to enjoy the various other engagements that you can participate in around the lake. The pristine forest provides a good respite from the sweltering sunlight and adds a notch of trekking challenge with its swampy terrain. But worry not because there are several trails established and you can feel safe travelling your way around these established trails. Along the way, do not forget to look up and keep your eyes peel on the peeking wildlife found around the canopy for that extra wildlife experience.
