Cycle your way around the Mekong Delta, visit the famous floating markets and try out some local fruit prime for the picking as you journey the beautiful roads of the countryside.
Day 1 - Ho Chi Minh / Mekong Delta / Ben Tre
You will begin your journey immediately after we pick you up from your hotel. Departing at around 8 am, you will first head to Cai Lay, an approximately 2 hours’ drive away from Ho Chi Minh City. The district of Cai Lay is most famous for its idyllic charm of the Mekong Delta. Cai Lay District also serves as the gate to Mekong Delta in addition to its close proximity to Ho Chi Minh city. Both its geographical locality and proximity to Ho Chi Minh city puts the district at a very strategic position as it is able to tap on the richness of the ocean and the bustling city. Upon arrival, we will collect the bikes and enjoy a 2 hours’ bicycle ride on peaceful country lanes and quiet roads passing through local villages and canals. You will get the chance to stop by a tropical plantation to get a taste of some exotic seasonal fruits such as rambutans, jackfruits, durians, longans and many more (they do taste nicer when they are fresh off the tree). You will also be able to watch local farmers harvesting peanuts along the way, visit a coconut candy factory or a puffed rice factory.
Next, you will be visiting the Cai Be Catholic Church. Built from 1929 - 1932, the Cai Be Catholic Church is the tallest bell tower in Tien Giang Province of Southern Vietnam. At 4:00 A.M. every day, a group of young children will ring the bell and fill the morning sky with the melodious sound of the bell. If you so desire, you can watch them in action from a video recorded in the church. Aside from that, you will have many great photo opportunities at the church as you marvel at the amazing architecture of its interior.
You will then board a boat, visit the floating market and cruise over the Mekong river to Tan Phong island where we have a small sampan paddling waiting to take you on a cruise down the natural waterways. The floating markets serve as the very highlights of the Mekong Delta. These markets are central markets in the delta, where people can buy fruit and vegetables from local producers for their day-to-day needs. The goods are sold directly from the boats. Interestingly, the owners also hang the available products on long poles so that people can see what’s on offer even when they are far away from the boat. Small sampans also serve as mobile cafés where you can buy soft drinks, ice coffee or some other local delicacies. While cruising down the river, you will see the tropical gardens on Tan Phong Island and we will head and head out for lunch afterwards. Right after lunch, we continue our cycling trip on a small path under the green canopy along the water
You will then continue with a ferry crossing to Ngu Hiep island. Cycling for 4 km on this picturesque island, you will be passing by Ngu Hiep Island’s main marketplace as you head for another ferry ride. Boarding a ferry and crossing over to Tam Binh Market, you will stop and have a short coffee break before you continue your journey. Then, continue cycling back to orchards and Vinh Kim, the prime ground for milk fruit tree (Canito fruit). We then continue with another 4 km bike ride along Rach Gam River to the monument of Rach Gam - Xoai Mut victory. Here, you will get to listen to the battle of Quang Trung King against the Siam navy troops in 1785. Afterwards, we will ride to Binh Duc where we take a ferry to Thoi Son Island, our stop for the night. Retreat and rest yourself at a cosy local homestay prepared for you.
Day 2 - Ben Tre / Ho Chi Minh city
Wake up fresh in the morning while you wait for your breakfast to be served at your local homestay and prepare for your big cycling day. The route will take us along the river and through Ben Tre coconut palm line roads. Along the way, we will head to Pau for lunch and a taste of the seasonal fruits before visiting a coconut candy and a handicraft workshop (time permitting). Then, we will wrap up the adventure with a small canal cruise before heading back to Ho Chi Minh city and your hotel.
