Tour Hue by bicycle and go back in time by visiting the Nguyen emperor tombs, Hue Imperial city and traditional occupation villages
Enjoy your cycling trip while exploring Hue city in the morning while observing its daily routine happening around you: locals going to work or to school, housewives heading to markets to buy things needed for the day and so on. Before arriving at Minh Mang tomb, you will stopover two traditional villages.
The conical hat is a symbol for the poetic Hue. Conical hat making is also very famous in Hue. The traditional occupation has a reputation of hundreds of years. The conical hat may appear simple and easy. However, making the hat itself goes through 15 different stages: picking the palm tree leaf, drying them, and then re-picking the leaf, forming the frame of the hat and so on. Each and every stage takes time and hard work. Moreover, it takes an ingenious pair of hands and the love of hat making to create such light, sophisticated and delicate hat.
Upon arriving at the incense village, you will be surprised because of the beautiful and colourful incense. Not only are they carefully displayed, but they are also arranged accordingly to their colours. The soft aroma of the incense will penetrate your nostrils as well. Coming to the village, you have the chance to observe every stage of making the incense, from picking the ingredients to making the incense powder. No machines are used as the villagers want to preserve the old ways. The villagers are very willing to let you try to make the incense, too.
Minh Mang tomb is one of the most famous tombs. The tomb is located at the confluence of the two Perfume River tributaries. It was built from 1840 to 1843, owning a wide architecture as it is divided into many different sections. It is a restrained, serene and classical temple. There are statues and colourful flowers surrounding the walk to the tomb.
Move on to another monument - Khai Dinh tomb. Completed in 1930, the tomb’s composition is a mix of Gothic, baroque, Hindu, and Chinese Qing dynasty architecture. The outer room ceiling is painted by someone who used both his hands and his feet, which some say is a disrespect to the king. Another special thing is that In most tombs the location of the emperor’s actual remains is a secret, but Khai Dinh has boldly placed his under his de facto tomb itself. After paying a visit to the late emperor’s, let’s take a break and have lunch to recharge your energy for the next upcoming destinations.
The next destination is Hue citadel or Hue Imperial City. Hue Citadel, built in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long, is a huge complex covering an area of 520ha and comprising three circles of ramparts including Hue Capital Citadel, Royal Citadel, and Forbidden Citadel. It was said to be protected by the two sand dunes: The Con Hen and Con Da Vien on the Perfume River, as "dragon on the left, tiger on the right". It was constructed by French architecture. The property is rich in history and culture. Take the chance to learn what more about the Nguyen dynasty history as well as the life in the Imperial Citadel.
Dong Ba market is another symbol of Hue. The architecture of the market itself is not that much of a highlight but rather the market’s atmosphere and daily pace. You can also easily spot the old bell tower standing tall and proud amidst the complex of buildings. You can buy almost anything here, from seafood to clothes. After the visit to the market, you will cycle back to the city and wrap up a journey of exploring and learning.
