The waterway and river of Cua Dai has played a significant wartime role in its old days. Today, the river is the thriving source of income for local folks and bless the surrounding villages and residence with its bountiful fish and river ecosystem. The local folks have been supporting themselves with the resources of the river and has even innovated their own bamboo boat for their fishing purpose on the river. Paddle down the stunning surrounding of Cua Dai RIver filled with coconut and palm trees as you chat and spend time with local villagers and fishermen casting their nets into the clear river.
You will first be picked up at your hotel and transfer out to a local fishing village. There, you will learn about the daily lives of Vietnamese fishermen, their families and their community. Then, make your way onboard your cruise and paddle your way along Cua Dai River. While you are there, join local fishermen around the river and enjoy hands-on experience of round net and cast net fishing. While you are there, learn to paddle the unique Vietnamese bamboo basket boat and join in a basket boat race on the river. Helf annually by talented local folks, this race is popular amongst both locals and tourists and offer visitors a unique experience of Hoi An in itself. The history behind the invention of the boat is also interesting to learn. When the French arrived in Vietnam, they began levying heavy taxes – including a tax on the ownership of boats. Most of the poor Vietnamese fishermen who depended on boats for their livelihood could not afford to pay their taxes, so they invented a new type of boat – Thung Chai a.k.a. round bamboo basket boat - the very same one you will get to see. Enjoy a spectacular basket boat dancing on the round boat by talented local crews before continuing down the tranquil coconut-palm flanked waterways of the past war and hear of the extreme conditions endured by soldiers during the wartime period. Finally, you will also try your hand on making origami creations from reeds of palm leaves such as grasshoppers, birds, rings, sunglasses, bracelets. Then, head back onboard for your lunch and drink before concluding your tour for the day.
