Relive the harsh conditions and wartime endurance of the Vietnamese soldiers by making your way down the Cu Chi Tunnel.
In the 19th century, Southeast Asia was a lucrative destination for foreign powers to come and colonize. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia themselves were previously colonized by France in 1880 and this led to the Indochina colony for Europe. However, it was not long before the locals staged an uprising and went against their colony master. Guerilla war tactics were employed and among the many unique battle strategy is the Cu Chi Tunnel strategy which spanned along Cu Chi where resistance army would reside. The underground tunnel proved to be very effective in their strategic attack and soon, it became a key gamechanger in the battle. Today, you will get to learn more about the interior and history of this wondrous tunnel by coming into the tunnel directly and experiencing life underground.
The Cu Chi Tunnel system was created in 1948 to assist the Viet Minh as they fought against the French for independence. Digging and building a network of tunnels continued over the next 25 years until an underground city was successfully built with functioning living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centres. The tunnel network itself could house thousands of people who lived almost entirely underground for years to come. Inside the tunnel, people would lead a relatively normal life, including getting married and raising children amongst others. The tunnel’s function and role even extends to the American War as the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a free fire zone. The area was heavily bombed and attacked and even then, the tunnel played an important role in launching guerilla attacks and deploying traps for the local resistance. When the war was over, the tunnel was no longer used. In 1988, two sections of the tunnels were opened for visitors to come and see. Today, you have the chance to enjoy this experience firsthand as you go down the tunnel and explore the underground interior of the tunnel network. Once you come back above ground, you will also get the option to continue your tour and fire some rounds from a war era M16 or AK47 at the nearby firing range. Do note that this is optional and that the firing range experience will incur additional fees should you decide to try it out.
