Tread the lively and bustling roads of Cam Thanh, a colorful small village rich with culture and history only minutes away from Hoi An.
Drive to a Coc Ly market, a local marketplace located 7 kilometers to the northeast of Lao Cai. The road is quite long and could get a little bumpy during the last 30 kilometers or so, but worry not as you will find the trip worth the while. Coc Ly lies in a rather rural area of Lao Cai, thus preserving the authentic tribal and trade commercial way of life. Unlike the big towns, the ethnic groups here do not dress up simply for tourists. They dress up for the market trading day simply because it is an important day that only takes place once a week. During this festive and colourful Tuesday, you will find the entire region alive with a stream of colours and a whole crowd of deals going around.
Immerse yourself into the centre of the market crowd and take part in the trading and bargaining livelihood of the local community. Engage yourself in conversations with the locals and explore the market, unpacking different sides of the place from the different products, exclusive goods, delicious food and strongly built animals that each makes up the local economy. There is something for everyone here - and if you are looking to explore something out of the ordinary element of the market, make sure to stop at the animal section. Hens, dogs, buffaloes and even horses can be found here and each plays a significant role in supporting the local economy and trade. If you are looking to buy souvenirs for your friends and family, you can visit the fabric stall. Or, if you are looking to experience the authentic local cuisine, stop by at the food stalls and try out some local delicacy you will never get to find anywhere else.
After you have explored the market, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on your trek. Weather permitting, you will take a boat ride on the Song Chay river and marvel at the breathtakingly beautiful landscape of seemingly unending fields, green corn fields and local houses on the riverside. As you travel down Song Chay river, you will stop at Trung Do village. Home to the Tay tribe, visit their famous traditional stilt house while you enjoy a cup of tea in the house centre. Listen to their fascinating stories and legends and participate in the local festival should you be lucky enough to witness one. If there is no ongoing festival, you can still try out the daily activities of the local residents such as harvesting and planting rice crops.
