Indulge into the historic sentiments of Chiang Mai Old City and discover ancient temples within a modern city!
The Old City of Chiang Mai is a mixture of ancient and modern cultures of Chiang Mai. Contemporary cafes and bars situated at every corner of the city while numerous ancient temples also can be seen within the Old City walls. The tiny alleyways within the Old City of Chiang Mai give off a soothing vibe. A bike tour is an excellent way to discover the beautiful Chiang Mai Old City and its rich cultures behind a colourful history.
We will meet at the meeting point near Chiang Mai Gate for a short briefing and a quick bike fitting before we begin our journey to explore the charms of Chiang Mai Old City. It will be an easy and chill ride throughout the city traversing small lanes of alleys and streets. Our first stop after a short cycle from the meeting point will be the Tha Phae Gate which was once the entrance through where traders brought their wares into the city. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Chiang Mai. It is part of the crumbling city wall which is once the fortress for the Old City. Next, we will ride to the Somphet Market nearby. You will be able to learn a thing or two about Chiang Mai food and taste some fruits and sweets while you are at it. It has many juice stalls and coffee shops around the area too.
After a short stop at the Somphet Market, we continue our tour to Wat Chiang Man which is also Chiang Mai’s oldest temple dating all the way back in 1296. It holds some important Buddhist images including a famous crystal Buddha and a marble Buddha. You can take a relaxing walk around the quiet temple. Then, we will continue our tour cycling to the cosmological heart of Chiang Mai which is called the City Navel. We will visit the Navel Temple here that has a serene 700-year-old white Buddha. A historical monument named the Three Kings Monument dedicated to the three Northern Kings who founded the city of Chiang Mai is also in the area. This monument has become an iconic part of the city.
Next, we will end our trip with a high note by visiting Chiang Mai’s grandest monument, the Wat Chedi Luang as the final stop. It was built to house the ashes of a king and was once the home of the renowned Emerald Buddha. Now, it is the home of the City Pillar and 3 auspicious dipterocarp trees which is believed to provide protection to the city. Then, we will ride back to the meeting point to end our lovely bike tour.
