Experience the tranquility of Chiang Mai’s peaceful side through an intimate adventure to its countryside!
While Chiang Mai city is an absolute jewel in Thailand’s tourism, its countryside is also worth a trip. There are so much more to see in Chiang Mai’s countryside. An artistic wood carving village, a majestic ancient temple, authentic Thai local market are just some of the locations to visit. It will certainly be a good change of scene to move from the usual city to the outskirts of Chiang Mai.
Before we begin our journey, we will meet at the meeting point near Chiang Mai Gate. After a quick bike fitting and briefing, we will cycle to the railway station in order to catch the train to Lamphun. The train ride will take around 30 minutes bringing us South of Chiang Mai to Lamphun. Upon reaching the Lamphun Railway Station, we will bike from the station through hushed streets and roads past the ancient city wall to our first destination. Our first stop will be the sacred Temple of Phra That Hariphunchai. It is housed in the middle of Lamphun city and has been regarded as an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. One of the temple’s most iconic landmark is the 46-metre tall golden Chedi. You will be able to witness an impressive work of the ancient times.
Continue cycling out of the city, the tour will wander through fruit orchards and some canals along the way. You will get to feel the serenity of the countryside’s vast fields. We will stop in a small village to enjoy an authentic and simple yet delicious Thai meal. After lunch, we will be biking across the Ping River and through paddy fields to arrive at the woodcarving village of Ban Tawai. There are a huge collection of handicrafts and arts available for sale. You might want to pick up some good arts and souvenirs here. The village is a major cultural attraction of Chiang Mai.
Next on the tour, we will be cycling through country lanes across small villages and forested lanes in the foothills of Doi Suthep. Along the way, we will stop by at an ancient forest shrine of one of the founding kings of Chiang Mai. After a few rolling hills we will then reach the renowned forest temple and meditation centre of Wat Umong. Its most unique features are the meditation tunnels in the temple which creates a silent ambience. Taking a stroll through the temple’s caves will definitely be a unique experience. We will then back on our bike to cycle the last stretch of road into the city passing the University of Chiang Mai campus along the way. Alas, we will be back at our meeting point to end our bike tour to the countryside.
