Your journey begins with a ride to Chiang Rai where you will have a chance to admire the panoramic landscapes that surround you as you traverse to the north of Thailand. Marvel at the silhouettes of mountains and valleys under the vast expanse of the bright sky that is completely unblocked by tall buildings. Upon arrival to the boat landing, you will journey upstream the slow-moving Mae Kok river that exudes a sense of serenity with the sight of green trees surrounding the river and the sounds of wildlife in its natural state.
Your first stop would be to Karen village, where the inhabitants of the village are known to still practice their ancestors’ customs of elongating their necks. The Karen women in the village can be seen to be wearing heavy brass rings around their neck, possibly to achieve the ideal beauty standard among the Karen communities. The elongated neck is a result of the weights of the coils that compresses the shoulder, which gives the appearance of an elongated neck. The dying culture of the Karen tribe will offer you an exotic, close up experience that we often only get to see through the media. As Karen women are well known for their weaving and knitting skills, you can find yourself some unique handmade souvenirs which can be purchased from them.
Head next to the Red Lahu hill tribe village where you would observe the customs of the local villagers and their daily routines. The Lahu people are usually found in the mountains of Laos, Myanmar, China and northern Thailand. There are four tribes in Lahu which are represented in different colours such as the Red, Black, Yellow and She Leh. The off the beaten path Red Lahu Village in nestled deep in the mountains that are surrounded by lush green forests. Your trip to visiting the hill tribe villages will offer you a sight of their traditional houses that are built on high stilts with wooden planks. Witness the simple daily routine of the Lahu people, where adults cutting wood while the kids chase each other in the streets are a common sight here.
After the exploration of local villages, you will head back to the boat landing where you will consume a sumptuous lunch to replenish your energy. Then, you will depart to Chiang Saen, a home to the ancient city that is situated along the steep banks of Maekhong river, opposite of Laos. Gaze at some magnificent ancient ruins and temples with its majestic architecture. Located not too far away from Chiang Saen is the Golden Triangle region. Traverse to the Golden Triangle region where you will encounter the borders between Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. After a long day, you will big goodbye to Chiang Rai before making your way back to Chiang Mai!
