Experience working on a farm and then catching fish on a river in a basket boat and hear stories about the Vietnamese war at Cam Thanh village.
You will drive a bicycle instead of the usual minivan to the destination. This will give you a better chance to both observe and appreciate the countryside’s scenery. It is peaceful, calm and relaxing. After arriving at the destination, transform into a local farmer and get your hands and feet dirty. Your “fellow farmers” are going to teach you how to plough, plant baby rice plants, water them or harvest them if the harvest season has come. Learn how to do the farming procedure in the traditional way, there are no machines to help you whatsoever. Following your hard work on the field, try riding a water buffalo - an almost symbolic activity of Vietnam’s countryside.
Let’s learn about another skill that still follows the traditional ways: making fish sauce. You will visit a family with the tradition of making this signature Asian spice. They will tell you stories of how the procedure is carried out, show you the fish sauce containers and more. Continue on your trip to the fishing village. Try what it feels like to be in a basket boat, a unique boat that is small, circular and usually made from bamboo. People say its origin dates back to the French Colonial Era when a variety of new taxes were introduced, including tax for owning a boat. The poor fisherman couldn’t pay it yet couldn’t also risk losing this livelihood.
Basket boats then were invented to avoid tax paying, because fishermen would claim that they are just really big baskets, not boats. And it worked. The story is only one of the many stories during the brutal war era. There will be a lot more to hear, so make sure to carefully listen to them. Then, test out your paddling skills as the locals are going to show you how to properly control it. Moreover, the villagers will instruct you how to catch fish using their very own nets. Become a true fisherman by trying out all the skills you have learned! The meal after your first fishing trip also marks the end of the trip as you will cycle back to the city afterwards.
